Yeah, no problems with it. It's really well balanced. I've found that it works best facing you for exercises where you hold the body rather than the handle. The ears screw up my grip if it's face out.

Not an issue for me but, yes the gusset is cosmetic. Wouldn't have been the wiser without your question.
