I have been thinking for some time how to illustrate the fabrics (new website will have a tab for "Fabric Details").

How's this?  Images will always be cropped to the same scale and displayed at the same size…

        great idea,
but would use a thinner ruler (could be a virtual one).

I have not been able to find a thinner white on black set square.  I want a heavy set square so that it holds the fabric flat and also a set square gives me right angles to ensure my perspective is correct when I edit it (which thus, I think, means a virtual one does not help with that).
I'm open to a better way of doing this, but it needs to be easy to do with minimum post shot processing else it becomes a chore…

For us pathetic Americans, a scale in inches would be nice.  And I don't know how large your sample swatches are, but it might be helpful to see a bit more of the fabric in the shot.

If the pictures are all sized the same you could just embed a reusable component like this http://jsfiddle.net/thirdender/kwcug/

Or this may be better http://ruler.hilliuse.com

              Think it, be it.

Yes, can do.  And yes will take a shot from further away too….

Great idea Giles. Perhaps cut out the outer scale.

Let @shoque worry about that, again, it's a reusable component. It makes your job easier.

So the process would be something like:

                          I take photo
I edit to a known size
We drop the code around it or something like that and the rulers appear in viewed image?

You know how I make my penis 9" long?

                                Fold it in half…..

I think so. The second one is stylesheet based, so you would be able to invoke it on any image. I am not an expert, but I believe it is straightforward, compatible across platforms, and handles units conversion.

See? Units conversion snafus are quite common.
