Newbie Question - Should I be purchasing by size or waist measurement by manufacture?

Most jeans I have purchased, size and waist are approximately the same, but I have seen some were size is 32 but waist shows 35.

I am a size 32…..should I be purchasing on the stated size or the stated waist?

To a great extent you can ignore the tag size - they are often more myth than fact.  The safest way to go is to actually measure a pir of your current jeans and then compare the measurements which are usually published for the jean you are looking at.

^ Thank you Giles - so if I understand…focus more on the waist measurement of my fitted jean and purchase base on this measurement and tag size will take into consideration any shrinking (floating average)?

No, I actually meant don't overly focus on the tag size.  For instance Irin Heart are fairly accurate, but the actual waist can vary plus or minus 1 inch.

If your current jeans measure 32.  You may consider getting a tag size 31 in 634S because you can stretch them to 32, some people would even go for a tag size 30, knowing that with a bit of effort they could stretch them to size.  Read the stretching thread.

In the 666Sod, some people are getting 3 inches of stretch.

But Levis (and other western brands) will tag a pair of jeans that actually measure 35 as a 32 - it make the buyer feel better because they are encouraged to believe they are slimmer than they are.

If you are looking at IH, let me know what you are after and I'll give you some advice.

If you are after another brand, look for another nice person…...... 🙂

I'm looking for a post, but I'm not sure which thread it was in, that included an online source of flat waxed laces.  The search function and my google fu are failing me.  I think it was in one of the boot/shoe threads and was post by Giles, hectic, or somebody else from the UK.  Anybody know where to find it?

I saw a post about that over on SuFu in the shoes & boots thread.  If I remember correctly, the Alden store in Manhattan sells those laces for around $5 plus shipping.  Don't remember seeing any sources outside the US, though.
