I picked up a few pairs of these. Honestly socks are not that exciting, but these will be good if they last as long as they claim. My question is, is it OK to throw these in the dryer like a regular sock?

@goosehd good to know, thanks. There’s nothing sadder in life than waiting for socks to air dry. 😂

In complete agreement and put a fairly large order in today for some replacements.

Since I posted a while ago promising a long term comparison to darn toughs, these have become one of my favorite socks mostly because of their versatility.

They work in any shoe I own having juuust enough padding to be comfortable all day and are juuust thin enough to wear with engineer boots that have snug and low toes. Durability wise, there is some pilling going on in the heels as might be expected and the elastic seems to be holding up reasonably well, though the top of the cuffs arent staying as square and tight as they were when new. They breathe well enough, keep my feet dry, and also provide a modest amount of warmth.

If I was forced to pick a single favorite between the two, I'd still say darn tough because of how well they fit my feet/legs, they last forever, have a great warranty that I've only needed once in over 10 years, breathe/dry well, seem to tolerate wearing more days and stinking less, and just seem to stay put better and provide me more support. Still, these are great socks for someone looking for a "regular" looking, durable, 3-season kind of sock, suitable for casual wear. My third favorite sock are the IH ones fwiw.

Bonus points, if anyone goes to Tokyo, there's a Chup store at the 2k540 Akihibara Artisan market that has these and so many more amazing socks including some that i think were either cashmere or mohair for ~100$. We stumbled on to this store one of our last days and I walked out with a couple more pairs of these long life socks after checking the size I ordered from IH :D. The shop owner there was also incredibly kind, helpful, friendly, and genuinely gracious to us.

@pechelman for me that would be an apples to oranges comparison because it’s mostly wool (Darn Tough, unless I’m mistaken) versus mostly cotton. Understanding the advantages of wool, I prefer cotton outside of certain technical use. My feet feel drier with a non hydrophobic sock and they don’t stink either, which is unfortunately not always the case for me with wool.

That said there are definitely applications I prefer wool, but not for everyday. I find these Life Longs to be perfect thickness and softness for 95% of my days, and I love how they hold up since I tend to skid around the house in them 😂 Just glad to finally have socks that don’t almost immediately go bald at the heel.

That's a good shout, I might be an odd duck in that I prefer wool in general and do wear them year round without any thought to the temp or activity. Maybe TMI, but for the longest time it was the only material that worked with my feet that tend to sweat a lot. Cotton would do as cotton does and it kept my feet wet and cold once they started to sweat where the wool would wick and insulate. I'd have this problem even just sitting in the office with cotton, especially with sneakers that have more synthetic materials.

I don't seem to have this problem at all with the long life socks despite being sure I would. Maybe it's the blend of cordura and the type of knit? I certainly had a huge initial bias against them when I got the first pair (actually returning them) thinking they wouldn't work, but here I am. They're great socks!

Anyone with these socks from a previous stock order some of these new ones? Wondering you've found that the sizing is very different both in the foot and length in the calf. Already emailed the shop to see if I screwed up or what but I bet the new size mediums I got would fit up to a size 14 or something.

Crappy attempt to show the differences.

@pechelman yeah the old ones are different. One thing I’ve noticed about these though is they seem to tighten up with age and washes. So they may have decided to build that in. My newer batches felt loose at first but now feel great. My old batches are a little harder to put on now but still fit.

                                  Hi Philip,

I replied to your email directly, but in case you missed it, please see below.

We haven't had any communication from Chup that the size has changed, and we do run a quick spot check when we get restocks on these and we didn't notice anything to drastic. These socks are made on old machines and are also hand linked so some variation is normal. We have also not had any other customers reach out regarding a change of size and its hard to tell without having the pair in front of me, but theres a chance it might just be the pair you have there.

Thanks everyone. Jack has been in touch. I wasn't meaning to sound an alarm just see if anyone has new vs old experience with these. I can't say I noticed my old ones tightening up much @mclaincausey but I almost always hang dry my socks. I guess I could do an experiment and hot soak one pair and then dry it to compare.

said in CHUP-TS1 - "Life Long" Socks with Cordura®:

                                      1000002217.jpg

Rather than return these socks which would have cost the same as their value, I decided to take a gamble after a little chat with @mclaincausey

I wore them just like this new and they sucked. Super sloppy fit, felt like wearing sacks on my feet, feet were sweaty and cold. Probably the worst I've ever had.

I threw them in the wash and they appeared to tighten up. They stretched out quickly and I was back to hating them. But I kept at it and hot washed and hot dried them a couple more times. Given the synthetic fiber, it's surprising that they do this, but they're basically the same size now as my old original pairs.

After a couple more wears, The fit is much better but still a tad looser around the foot from the og models. Length is now on par with the sizing chart from chup imo.

There were two other pairs in this order with the heather/mix color that have both tightened up similarly but maybe more permanently. Those are doing good and feel just like the old ones (I also have solid colors of the old models).

Anyway, still a little disappointed in the experience compared to the old ones but they're almost the same now and at least very wearable.

@pechelman good to hear that my foggy recollection wasn’t too far off about the STF aspect of these. I noticed a pair was a bit loose still recently, they were either larger or just haven’t shrunk yet; maybe I’ve washed them less.

Best socks on the planet when they fit imo
