Early 19th Century Scottish…..It looks a bit Art Nouveau, but it ain't......The register grate (can't control the airflow) was an early Victorian thing, this thing will burn coal like The Mallard

It was only later in the 19th Century that they work out how to control the burn

Really! The clean lines are brilliant. I was thinking some kind of Art Deco. What’s the inner (lead?) section called? The central square motif is fit.

Polished steel.  It was as rusty as fuck.  I spent 4 hours last weekend with fine sandpaper, de-rusting it….

            Paula watched....

Shit that must get hot… my parents have a steel woodburner in Spain. They prefer them in winter as it gets real hot, real quick, but doesn't retain the heat for long. You don't need it until the next evening.

Everything in Norway is cast iron and lined, with an airflow control that is calibrated like a bloody watch. If you can't go to bed and still have it generating heat in the morning it's a worthless pos.

              Paula watched….

Supportive watching or critical watching?  😉

Is that a Norwegian concept, because my wife is most certainly unfamiliar with it.

Apparently it is a thing yes, although I suspect you are not alone in your confusion. My impression is that in heterosexual relationships based on more traditional gender roles, this is something men are often expected to be good at and not something that their female partners need to practice. It’s a bit like putting the toilet seat down.

That is a stunning fireplace - maybe early for the Art Nouveau period but I could see a young Rennie Mackintosh or Margaret MacDonald warming their cockles in front of it's flames at a family home and parking the memory to use as inspiration for designs in later life!

                    My contribution, to urban blues…

As I mentioned previously, I have an older sister. Growing up, we shared a bathroom. She was rather adamant about that toilet seat issue. It was not always a peaceful, respectful discussion.

The result of this is that I never, ever leave the seat up.

I never leave the toilet seat up because I like getting laid. If you do too, then put the seat down and don't point out that the counter is full of her makeup and hair appliances when she gets onto you when you forget.

It is a very ingrained habit in all seriousness, probably also due to sharing a bathroom with a sister growing up. Since men too occasionally need to sit in the loo, it's common sense that this is plain good manners.

What's less ingrained is putting the seat cover down, which is becoming necessary with two dogs in the house.

                        Think it, be it.

The "makeup and appliance all over the bathroom" vanity has always been a major pet peeve of mine.  It wasn't cheap but I found a good solution for that when we remodeled:

Is it worth the money?  Probably not, but at least I don't have to look at a vanity without an inch to spare.

He painted the new dining room (what was the old kitchen), put a mirror up (that P and I found a few weeks ago for nothing) and then to cap it all, he found a fireguard in a skip that may as well have been made-to-measure.....Oh, and the corbels I got off ebay for £49 delivered, they'll do 😃 😃

And he found time to knock up a pelmet and start fitting the architrave and skirting in the new kitchen….
