I also have an overdyed IHSH-178, and it's pretty damn stout/creaky. I know it's different denim, but does the overdying process have as much of a stiffening effect on the 21oz?

The traditional 21oz I already very soft, becoming more so with wear and the OD'ing only accelerates that. The denim the IHSH-178 is made of starts off very stout, the OD'ing isn't the reason for that.

Ahh, gotcha. I've got a pair of the 666s 18oz raw, and though they're definitely not as soft as the 21oz, they're still moderately forgiving. I think I assumed that the OD started out as that denim before the overdye process, but I guess that could be a totally different 18oz?

Regardless, happy to know that the 21oz OD fabric is soft, just wanted to explain my faulty logic haha. I really like my IHSH-178 but having a jean in that fabric might go beyond my personal threshold 😃

There have been two 18oz. The now extinct OG version that was originally first used on the first ever 666 iteration (IH-666S) and the new 18oz vintage style. I believe that is the what the IHSH-178 is made from.

I’m wearing my new pair of IH-888s-od made from 21oz now for the third time and it really is soft, thick and supple. Great stuff.

Nope, the IHSH-177 and 178 are made from the OG 18oz.  We have just used the final meterage of that denim on the current production runs of the IHSH-177 and 178.  On the basis that they will sell fast, they always do, we are sampling both CPO's in the 18oz vintage denim.

So Neph, you were before your time  🙂

That makes more sense as the vintage 18oz is a lot more forgiving than the og version.  It also makes me getting my hands on a 178 even more of a prerogative.

Just to quote myself, it would carry on a fine tradition of me fucking up on OD CPO’s if I didn’t get a 178. I managed to fail on numerous occasions to get my hands on a 99 as well… maybe I should just wait for the new version. The vintage 18oz is wonderful stuff and I suspect the shirt would be a very different and quite unique beast when compared to its predecessors.

Ha, that's pretty interesting — I'll have to compare my OG 666s with the 178 when I get back home. I love em both, just for some reason the CPO always seemed much stouter to me, so I like said I guessed the stiffness came from that dyeing process, in the sense that denim often stiffens up quite a bit after a wash.

In general I wear the jeans and wash them a whole lot more than the CPO though, due to the fact that we pretty much get hardly any real winter here, so the jeans have likely just broken in a lot more.

I have the 177 and the 555-02 in the same denim except for the fact the shirt’s been one washed, and it definitely feels like the shirt is heavier/thicker or more stout as you described it.

I’m thinking seams play a role in this. Lots of heavy seams on a shirt. Type III’s do the same.

Could be something to do with the way the the fugitive dye saturates the fabric. I think I know what you mean. My od’ed 21oz Type III feels heavier and thicker to the hand than standard 21oz. I do love all these odd deviations and mysteries with these fabrics.

Impatiently awaiting a restock on these… I wonder if the mainstream trend back to wider lower legs (ie boot cut) will see the 666 cut doing well? I have 2 pairs of 666, and I love that wider look whilst retaining the slim top-block. I think paradoxically it suits skinny legs, alleviating the 'tuning fork' look.

Anyhoo, just drooling out loud anticiping an OD pair.

I've had a pair for a couple of weeks. I could potentially  have sized down, they're a bit roomier than my 21 indigo 666 with some stretch to come. I hope I don't end up with too much slop in the top box (so to speak), but I'm actually liking the slightly looser look. OD is the business as usual! I'm hoping they don't lose the black too quick, although the bluish tinge is clear here against the real black of the chino type 2. Love 'em, just got my fingers crossed on the settling-in.

I they never go truly blue. Even well faded pairs still look like they were black jeans once.

I honestly can’t see how you would want them any looser! It is a great fit. Well done. I think there is a lot to be said for comfort. I also enjoy having pairs that a are a little more relaxed than others.

I’ll also add that after two weeks wear, there shouldn’t be much more stretch left.
