My poor students should be thrilled with the modern developments of denim history

..when we got to our social studies unit about the California gold rush and we got to the 49ers era in San Francisco …I took a slight, 30 minute detour, and made sure they understood how denim was created in San Francisco for the gold miners and other hard workers and that Levi’s (had them point to their own jeans) was founded in that region for the purpose of tough work wear? And isn’t it interesting how the very clothes we wear today have such a cool history, etc etc…their groanings of “Mr. Mizmazzle, can we please stop talking about denim and boots all the time?”

@tody yeah I haven’t read the earlier books either and I definitely wish I had now. I kind of skim spoiler parts in “Holly” and may go back and start with Mr. Mercedes when I’m done. It is good though so you should definitely read when you can

Looking forward to this one. Loved this fella. I remember him guessing 3 out of 4 of our birthdays when he was playing a friend’s wedding and learned later that he did that all the time.

I was almost unsurprised when he died on stage at the encore of a concert celebrating his storied career. Got to see him perform in several different bands and really appreciate all of the musicians and music he surfaced to the world.

I finally finished this one today. Needed multiple attempts, was on the backburner for quite some time.
Starts fairly slow, but picks up pace later on.

What about Pattern Recognition, have you read that? Buzz Ricksons black MA-1 and all that?

@Tago-Mago unless you disliked Neuromancer, I would highly recommend completing the Sprawl trilogy by tackling Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive next. The biography of the… nontraditional main characters is excellent and resolves across all 3 books.

The books are somewhat loosely coupled relative to most fantasy and sci fi series and human characters and settings come and go but all in the same world and with interesting evolution of the characters that do persist.

I’m a fan of all his work and have read the Sprawl trilogy 3 or more times over the past several decades and enjoyed it and taken more from it each time.

I’m currently reading Dark Money by Jane Mayer which is a disturbing and disheartening book on political influence. I will leave it at that.
