I'm assuming the measurements are based on the outside of the jacket. How thick is the jacket itself?

I don't have any well-fitting winter coats right now, but I'm assuming that using my shirt measurements would be a mistake.

Yes, the measurements are to the outside.  But do you have an IH shirt?  I am same size in most IH shirts and the IHM-04 (Large)….

I take an XXXL in most Iron Heart gear, and am also an XXXL in this.

The only reason I haven't picked one up is that I'm thinking of heading out to Australia later this year, and it might not get cold enough to wear it!

the only IH thing I have is beatle busters in 38. I'm assuming I'd be an XXXL in this.

I was almost gonna buy a Schott pea coat last winter….but the sale on this puts it into a competitive spot, and it's a bit less seen than a pea coat.

This is without a shadow of a doubt a far superior beast to the schott pea coat. It's great at blocking out wind and is especially nice in the navy (I picked up the black). To be honest I would probably be a 38 in the busters as they are a slimmer cut but I'm an xl in this. In shirts I'm normally about 23.3 pit to pit. I can do this comfortably with room to spare. Far more generous and a better cut than the buzz ricksons deck jacket.

(Meant to say do this up comfortably with room to spare plus yes, if I had the money I would probably also get the navy - the pics really don't do it justice hence why I went with black)

im a 38 in the jeans but I got a fair size gut. I'm an XL in Gap/Old Navy/J Crew/etc. That's why I'm assuming XXXL here. That's more than likely the size for me (and even then it may depend on loosing a few pounds before winter, which I'm planning for anyway)

I have heard people complain about Alpaca being itchy, but it is completely innocuous to me, and is devoid of lanolin and hypoallergenic. If Alpaca is itchy to you, you probably need to give up on woolen fabrics.

The IH one should be fine with short sleeves because the sleeves are quilt lined. My only concern was the neck and collar. Seems to be the only point where you might have contact with skin.

Has anyone waxed this jacket? Would something like Barbour Thornproof Dressing work just fine b/c of the interlining?  Or would I be risking the alpaca sopping up the wax?

I was thinking about trying the wax/heat gun method like Bandit did in his Mister Freedom N-1 waxing video.  I think it would darken up the 'light' black of the jacket nicely and give me the additional weather protection.

Yeah, I waxed the N1, worked well - I used Barbour Thornproof. I did 2 coats, really soaked it up but the result was good. I used a heat gun and you will need to be careful with getting the heat blast too close as it will wisp up some smoke from the interlining.

PM me if you want to nerd it up with more details.
