Google has introduced a REST API for interacting with their service. Having observed this same pattern with Jabber, ActiveSync, the continued sequential closing of Android, and other Google bait-and-switch tactics, this is what will happen:
1: Offer an API that provides real value, thus bolstering a strong network effect of third party mail client developers using it. In terms of competitive pressures, they are effectively forced to.

2: Once adoption of the API is very high, eliminate support for the open standard in order to give Google more control over their service, and more ability to support their objectives, which are a) gathering information from the user side of their network in order to bolster their value to the customer side of the network (advertisers) and b) making sure users of their services are inundated with advertising ubiquitously (IMAP allows users to bypass advertisement entirely). Google will even argue "now you don't have to build to multiple interfaces, just use our API!" as they throttle choice from their users.

Google is the company that saw Minority Effect's targeted advertising, which was intended to be a creepy artifact of a dystopian society, and took inspiration from it. Do not trust their motives.

                Think it, be it.

^ thanks, that was really interesting.

I take your point about Google's motivation; the passive transaction that Google consumers engage with is largely transparent for most users.

I also think that the cost of this transaction is poorly understood. Post-Snowdon the tinfoil hat wearers have regained some credibility.

I can easily imagine a scenario where personal data availability is ubiquitously utilized, I dunno…e.g.: locational realtime data linked to your driving record means that parking meter costs are higher just for you - I am sure we could come up with any amount of other examples.

This is a really good point, and one that I don't think any of us want to really think too closely on. Should I be concerned seeing I was a registered member of an association at the same time as IOError aka the guy who's been publishing all the recent stuff. I also have links with other guys who've directly associated with him.

If I should be concerned, should you be, being either 1 or 2 hops away etc? Turtles all the way down really.
