Self Edge mentions that the leather is of a superlative quality compared to the regular IHB-01 belt. Does that mean its a stronger cowhide? Is it vegetable tanned? Or fades better than IHB-01?

I usually wear size 38 in all USA-made belts. Do you think I should go for size L or XL?

go for the same size mate. i wear a Large for all my IHB-01, 02 and 03.  as mentioned by G, the one sold by SelfEdge is just difference in color.

This is the IH item I wear the most. So even when I'm not wearing IH jeans (I do confess to some infidelities with Pure Blue Japan jeans from time to time, but I swear it is not frequent!) I wear an IH belt. Best in the fucking universe.

I think I'm going to make the black 01 my next belt.  I'm a 31 in busters and would prob do a 30 for a slimmish 634s fit.  Should I go medium or large?

I have the IHB-02 in XL and I'm wearing it in the last hole, with having a 34-36" waist!
a L would be my way to go in this one I'd almost say…

for others, my reasoning
1 the belt looks better long vs short
2 it is super easy to shorten with zero detrimental effects

No. 2 is the clincher.

Too long can be altered to a perfect length in about 10 minutes.  Too short and you're going to be listing it in the Sales section in about 10 minutes.

M is too small for almost everyone

point 2 was what first came into my mind when you suggested the bigger size! think it's your safest bet to go with the bigger size then Ben!
