@endo I didn’t know that was a thing. We went in late August so everything was clear and beautiful. The fruit was crazy sweet too. Cambodia is a quick flight from Bangkok and also great if you want to to spend a couple of days visiting the Wats.

For laid back beach time Ko Pra Thong is amazing. It's a little remote (3hrs bus from Phuket, then a 1 hour boat ride). Relatively underdeveloped. Not a place to go if you want moon parties and all that, but beautiful and chill.

But it led me into some really interesting back alleys of the city and I met some really colorful people

We rendezvoused with the family two years ago in a villa on Phuket in Kamala Beach. We loved it. Yes, Phuket does attract the tourists. But because Kamala Beach is south of Patong, it seems to filter most tourists out. Super chill with a nice beach.

@endo I was there in 2016 so almost a decade ago. Loved Bangkok, koh phangan, koh tao and also koh samui was nice but a little crowded. If you can, I can recommend spending a couple days in cambodia, siem reap was a cool experience

@Bridger haha. I guess it did kind of come across that way. Ping Pong show not my thing…

But genuinely, it was more like odd marketplaces and alley ways lined with unique characters selling all sorts of random stuff. I discovered some really cool old Thai psych music and traditional style Thai pop and what not. It was a really fun musical scavenger hunt.

In the easy chair with my boots on, melted whiskey in my hand. Could'na been asleep for more than three hours...time to go to work again...

Thanks @jimcasey will check on Ko Pra Thong, sounds like my kind of thing.

@FlavourFade I travelled Cambodia in the 90s, when the Khmer Rouge still controlled half the country, nobody really reigned in Phnom Penh, and I almost drowned when our boat sank in the middle of the Tonle Sap (another story). Back then, I was the only tourist in Angkor Wat with about 5-6 other people, and I rode alone from temple to temple on a motorbike. That can't be repeated.

@endo wow !! That sounds like a story I'd like to hear with a nice cold beer!! Cambodia has still been quite the adventure when I was there but nowhere close to your trip 👀

Koh Chang. Like you, I backpacked through SE Asia/Thailand back in 93 & 95 etc.. My favourite island is Koh Chang and is exactly what you are looking for. It’s in the south east and on the border with Cambodia. It’s a bit off the beaten path as most people head south and miss this area. I think 70% of the island is a national park with lots of hiking trails and waterfalls. Amazing beaches and accommodations the suite any budget. Delicious food as you would expect. My youngest son was there last year and loved it. Easy to rent scooters when you are there to get around. I didn’t go snorkeling when I was there but you can easily look that up. Great chill vibe and the local herb is fine. Highly recommend.

If going south, I prefer the islands on the gulf side. Koh Pha Ngan was fun and stayed at Bottle beach for a couple of weeks in my mid twenties. Magical times. My oldest son was there just after Covid and had a great time (as any 19 year old would). Definitely a younger crowd. Koh Tao is also nice and the ferry ride is an adventure within itself! I went to Kao San Road in Bangkok last year and it’s nothing like the 90’s. Travelling around Thailand is the 90’s was a special time. You’ll notice a lot of changes.

@T4920 What are your sagely recommendations?

Living on a small island, I’m going travelling to get off the islands 😂 Too bad about Pai. It’s a beautiful part of the country. I’ll check with the locals and try to find out how bad it actually is when I am there in January. After Nepal, I’ll be meeting my wife in Thailand and have a couple of weeks to play. So far we have 2 nights booked in Chiang Mai and 4 nights in Pai. We might go back to CM after and use it as a base and explore from there? We’ll figure it out. I’m sure you and Mrs E will have an amazing time wherever you end up. I don’t know where or when, but someday we’ll meet up in person and have a good chinwag. Keep us in the loop on what you eventually decide and am already looking forward to the pics and stories!

@Denman-John thanks so much, man. Koh Chang seems to tick most if not all boxes for us. Will starting to get into more details and report back. But it already looks really nice. And I am also very happy that herb cultivation has been developed on a successful level there. P.S. Everybody should have some time in his/her twenties at Bottle Beach. ✌️
