Have sewn buttons onto two pairs of 21oz already and it works great. Just not a big fan of sewing myself.

I honestly think that is your only way forward here. Buttons for braces/suspenders are just not part of the IH aesthetic as I understand it. Much more of a heritage/vintage thing.
