We couldn’t let the Swiss Jeans Freak’s golden anniversary pass us by without celebrating the man and his unrivalled passion for denim with a very special collaboration. 50 years ago, a teenaged Ruedi Karrer received a bundle of clothes–a donation from a wealthier family from close to Geneva. Included in that bundle were two pairs of Big E selvedge Levi’s from the 1960s.

Something clicked inside him. Though the pairs were too large for him, he would handle them reverentially when his older brothers weren’t wearing them. He got his first pair of his own (a pair of Wranglers) in 1975, and with each passing year, his obsession with denim grew, and so did his collection of faded pairs. His Jeans Museum in Zurich is home to more than 14,000 pairs, and, though he is approaching retirement age, he shows no signs of slowing down.

Since the first pairs that Ruedi held in his hands were around 14 oz., we wanted to help Ruedi recreate some of that first feeling by producing a limited run of our own 14 oz. selvedge in two cuts, the 634 and the 777. The double-twisted yarns give the denim that trademark Iron Heart feel, and the denim opens up remarkably quickly, fading to beautiful and soft indigo tones significantly faster than our heavier denims. Nothing in our lineup is better suited to round-the-clock and around-the-calendar wear, and nothing is better for those who want to recreate some of the vintage feel that made denim a global phenomenon.

We’ve included a number of signature details to make this collaboration stand out from other pairs in our lineup and in your collection. The tonal arcuates are a subtle detail that we’ve used only a few times in our history, and we know that some of you will be thrilled that we’ve brought them back for this limited release. There’s also a specially designed patch featuring the Swiss Matterhorn mountain range and a pocket bag that highlights Ruedi’s contributions to the selvedge scene.

It’s a fitting tribute to an honorary member of the Iron Heart family, and we’re very proud to be helping Ruedi celebrate a truly incredible milestone. A portion of the proceeds from each pair will help support the Jeans Museum in Zurich.
