@Jord I went back and forth on this a long time when the PS5 came out and had two versions. I got the disc version console then realized that most games are only as good for as long as they have support. Eventually they become obsolete even with physical discs and/or a disc can be damaged and not work. I almost never go back and play old games after finishing them. Games as media don’t age well imo. You get iteratively better controls and features and most old games graphics are cringey to revisit. Example: one of my favorite games, Socom Confrontation was online only and decommissioned, rendering my disc useless. Vintage games like Mario are about the only thing I go back to for nostalgia, but I’d rather play a game, then move on to something new. I haven’t bought a disc since I got my PS5 with the disc option, and I can do without it. Just my take.

@Jord to add, I do like digital versions because my purchase can be removed to clear space if needed the re downloaded if I want for as long as it’s good, and don’t have to worry about a disc being damaged or lost. It’s available for as long as it’s relevant. Most discs these days don’t run the game anyway and just access downloads, right? It’s not like cartridges or old pre-online games or consoles. I do hate that everything now is just a consume-and-dispose model though, this goes for almost everything, even cars at this point.

@WhiskeySandwich I get that, maybe I'm just old school and it's the collector in me... I collect books/blu-rays too and it's just nice to own something they can't change/take away from me, but you're totally valid

Yeah you buy a disc and then have to download content/updates to play it, I'm just being pissy haha

@Jord I feel you man, there are less and less things practical for collections these days. Just the times changing I guess

I got the disc ed PS5 for the sole purpose of being able to buy cheap 2nd hand games... The PS store is extortionately expensive generally...

@Jord I think people are being harsh on Sony. Gamers have voted with their wallets and the majority buy digital.

Sony have been up front and given everyone 2 years notice. We all know Microsoft are planning the same but they have kept quiet.

I have had nearly every major console since the original NES so I grew up collecting physical games so I know it sucks for many but the sales just don’t warrant keeping it.

As long as they keep offering codes in boxes available in shops which they have said then the shops set those prices so should still hopefully get competitive pricing between shops.

I have the latest PlayStation even though I’m not really into playing games like I used to.
Recently my daughter and I bought Astro Bot so we could play together.
God damn what a fun and trippy game that is. It’s unbelievable how the feedback is given back through controller.

Astro Bot is great, sequel is so good.

I've been on a gaming sabbatical in terms of PS5. Still have to finish Cyberpunk. Haven't played ARC Raiders for 3 months. Haven't bought Black Flag yet. Been periodically gaming on the Switch2 though.

@Nick I think the version of Astro Bot we have would be considered the sequel.
Had to have a look at arc raiders, that looks like something I could get into. Awesome

ARC is very much playable for a newcomer. It's in a general lull right now as the end game loop hasnt retained most players - huge October update incoming, so it's a game worth playing and then returning to later in the year. Online multiplayer games tend to have issues with longevity, hard to balance the game + a small studio making content for it is always going to take time. Modern gamers have little patience.
