And the city don't know that the city is getting …

It has been 28 years since I was last here.

                IMG_7831.jpeg

Today, you can quickly reach the city from one of its airports using the air-conditioned elevated and underground railways. And the population has more than doubled.

                IMG_7745.jpeg

Our hotel is a traditionally built and decorated wooden house on the Khlong Bangkok Noi canal.

One of the few truly good places I have ever stayed in and only accessible through a narrow alley.

                IMG_7747.jpeg

The 2 ½ days we‘ve spent here were packed and awesome. Spent hours on Chatuchak Market, returned to the delights of street food and were shocked by a 5 min visit of Khaosan Rd, which was our haven in the 90s.

But a good friend of ours lives here and we went out with him.

Best bar only 2 minutes off Khaosan Road.

Karaoke in an unofficial bar, 3 very small and dark staircases above a 'Golden Duck' fast food restaurant.

So the next day, a little hungover, we took the ferry to Bang Kachao, and within minutes you exchange skyscrapers for village life that you can explore by bicycle.

@endo What an awesome start to the trip! Yeah, Khaosan Road area has changed a lot since the 90s, but it’s still a good time as your pictures show. Safe travels and look forward to island life pics.

I even spent my last night walking barefoot around Bangkok as the thongs (sandles flip flops etc) broke
And the street food was some of the best food I’ve ever had

We've been on Koh Phayam for a week now. Or is it forever? Hard to say. The days blend into one another. The beach is huge and the sea is always warm. Almost too warm.

Anyone who knows the Thais knows how welcoming they are. The food is fantastic, of course, and the cocktails and the weed are great too.

Tomorrow we're off to the neighboring island. Same same but (even) quieter. Another week at the beach, who can stand that?

Koh Chang Ranong (or Koh Chang Noi, the small Koh Chang in the Andaman Sea, not the one off the coast of Cambodia) – I'd say it's still like island life in Thailand in the 90s, just as I remember Koh Tao back then. While neighboring Koh Phayam might be like a 90s Koh Phangan, only without Haad Rin, but with a multitude of cafes, restaurants, and shops, here there are practically no shops, just a few restaurants, and also no cars. Along the beautiful, west-facing beaches, you'll find all kinds of bungalows and huts, generally quite basic, without air conditioning, and often without electricity. But you stay with friendly families who offer wonderful food, lots of fresh fish and seafood, and – thankfully – all kinds of alcohol. Plus, smoking weed is welcome everywhere. Simply paradise, if you can stand it. We're enjoying our last day now. Tomorrow we head home.
