Can anyone provide sizing advice/comparisons on the JL engineer boots?
No idea what my Brannock size would be as the UK doesn’t really use them. For comparison I’m:
US 9 in Red Wing moc toes and Blacksmiths
UK 8 in Cheaney
Uk 8 in Blundstone
UK 8-8.5 in Edward Green
And all my Converse are marked as UK 9 -
if I were you, I would measure correctly with a Brannock device. Measures your heel to toe, heel to ball and width. You can order one via Amazon..
You might find out that your heel to toe is a 9 and your heel to ball is 10 US(10 Brannock). This is especially important with engineers for the fit to be correct. It’s a small price to pay, I’ve known many people that had to sell thousand dollar plus boots because the fit was off.
All that being said typically, JL engineers are .5 down from Brannock if you’re a D width foot. If you’re an E with high volume, high arch they might be something you could take true to size.
Red wing Moc Toes, Iron Rangers, etc., are also half down from Brannock. if you were sized by Red Wing they’re notorious for putting people in boots that are too small…

Thanks for the advice. I asked Jamie at East West for advice too, as we take the same size in most shoes and he advised me to take the same as my Red Wing size so I bit the bullet and they arrived this morning. Definitely the right size to go for (9d) mostly comfortable immediately, although the outside seam will need to mould to my (larger) right foot a little. Easier to get on than my Skoobs too. I got these in natural CXL so it’ll be interesting to see how they age.

On the sizing advice? Absolutely spot on. I took the risk of not getting a brannock device as East West have an excellent returns policy.

Mis-sized my last JL Engineers. Sized down one and very happy now.
Natural CXL.

Patina Thunderdome has a new worn boots competition category. Kind of thinking of entering my Badalassi Grigios. My concern is if I wear em super hard they will just end up looking like my nattys color wise. Kind of feel they might be headed that way already….
Nattys with 3 years hard wear
Vs
Badalassi Grigios with 9 months light wear
-
Pretty sweet seeing some comparison pics of these man. Side note, my juvenile (and slightly dyslexic) brain always initially reads Badalassi Grigios as; Badass Gringo
-
gonna wear mine more to look like that!
-
My chapmans arrived the other day but im stuck in Croatia for work for another 4 days, suspense is killing me!
-
@flannel-slut that’s pretty hilarious because my brain has done the same exact thing!!
All you leather nerds out there…what are your thoughts on what direction this Badass Gringo is headed? Think it will end up looking the same as the natty cxl? Trying to decide if I’d rather wear them less hard and preserve their color a bit, for the sake of variety in my collection.
-
@Mizmazzle there are some examples on patina project of badalassi grigio leather! Looks like they are a (for me) completely different color when aged.
-
@Mizmazzle man I think I’d go with the gringos and see how they turn out since they have a lot less wear.
-
@Ikeaparty which color did you get?
-
@ZackB yeah. I’d 100% be going with the Grigios. But I don’t want to end up with two pairs of boots that look almost identical is all.
@FlavourFade thanks bro. I did look on there and the only boots in this leather I saw didn’t seem to have much wear on em. I’ll check back and see if I missed any.
