Very cool idea. I would be down for that.

When I went, we stayed in Portsmouth and caught the train / shuttle in and back and it was fine.

Also, the Thursday is quieter, cheaper and easier to get tix and accommodation than the other days.

The first question being, will there be a IH x Festival of Speed collaboration collection 🤔

I'm thinking a black waxed cotton rider's jacket with something like this on the back. Something old school dragway.

Second question - with all this great new IH x FOS gear, will there be an IH stand at Goodwood? 🤔

Super generalisation here. In Europe and USA people will spend a shit ton on getting their car or bike pimped to the nth degree and spend fuck-all on themselves. In Japan, looking good on/in your ride is as important as how good your ride looks.

Every bike/car show I have taken Iron Heart to has been an unmitigated disaster fiscally.

                    Interesting Giles.

Made me think of a time when I was living in Sydney and speaking with a dealer of second-hand Danish furniture that he imports from Copenhagen.

He said that Japan was the strongest market for vintage Danish furniture, stronger than the US and Australia. The reason he said was that Japanese houses are smaller and have limited space for furniture compared with American or Aussie homes. Therefore, the Japanese are willing to spend more on the perfect sofa as a statement piece because they won't be buying lots of stuff. Whereas the Americans and Aussies have potentially a bunch of rooms to fill with shit.

So, back your point - I suspect car ownership is lower in Japan, and they are willing to pay more for their clothes as that will be their statement piece out and about rather than the car.

I myself justified buying a Belstaff leather jacket as I knew I was never going to own a Maserati 🙂

Perhaps a thought for the unpopular opinions thread, but are F1 drivers really best? Or does Carlos Sainz Sr have a shinier set of family jewels and more talent than his son and does the same apply for other rally drivers?

Personally, I think I would be far more concerned with having to do a world cup rally race than line up in an F1 grid. I think rally drivers are like Riggs in Lethal Weapon 1.

Just to build on this. Here's what Gemini had to say about Pike's Peak.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has seen many legendary drivers from various motorsport disciplines. Here's a breakdown of winners with backgrounds in Formula 1 and Rallying:

                          Formula 1 Drivers
Only one driver who was also a Formula 1 World Champion has won the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb:

Mario Andretti: While primarily known for his IndyCar and Formula 1 successes (he was the 1978 F1 World Champion), Andretti won Pikes Peak in 1969.

Other F1 drivers or drivers with F1 experience who have competed but not won overall include Phil Hill (who later became an F1 World Champion).

                          Rally Drivers
Several highly acclaimed rally drivers have achieved overall victories at Pikes Peak, especially during the Group B rally car era when manufacturers brought highly specialized machines to the mountain:

Michèle Mouton: A legendary rally driver, she won Pikes Peak in 1985 with the Audi Sport Quattro S1.

Walter Röhrl: A two-time World Rally Champion, Röhrl won Pikes Peak in 1987 with the Audi Sport Quattro E2 Pikes Peak, setting a new record at the time.

Ari Vatanen: A World Rally Champion and Dakar Rally winner, Vatanen won Pikes Peak in 1988 with the iconic Peugeot 405 Turbo 16. His run was immortalized in the short film "Climb Dance."

Sébastien Loeb: The most successful rally driver of all time with nine WRC titles, Loeb absolutely shattered the Pikes Peak record in 2013 driving the Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak, achieving a time that stood for many years.

Rally seems much scarier to me than F1 but F1 has like 5g + forces on turns and they have to do that for tens of laps. It would be incredibly physically demanding to do that. So I’m really not sure who are the bigger badasses. Maybe a bit more skill in rally and physical stamina in F1. But then the rally racers have to be mechanics too.

Romain Dumas is the GOAT of Pikes. I wanna do that one too and it’s in my back yard.

                            Think it, be it.

I spent decades involved in rallying and knew plenty of competitors that raced as well. The short answer is that they are completely different disciplines with quite different skills involved. A talented racer will be quick on a rally, but not necessarily quick enough to win, and vice versa.

Good insight @NickD. What rally destinations did you visit?

@Bridger Almost all were mainland UK rallies - some of my family and family friends were competitors so I helped out as a mechanic basically - service crew in rally parlance. I did it on and off from the mid '90s until about 2012 or so.

Most events were gravel rather than tarmac, and the cars were Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts - the Mk2 was the ex Roger Clark '77 RAC rally winning car . I've been to the Isle of Man rally a few times, and a few events in Belgium.

Sounds awesome @NickD. I love the old Escorts, a couple of my friends had them and a neighbor restored one in Sydney in the 90s that must be worth a fortune now. Love that terrier / staffie bulldog look. A bit like the early 70s Alfas.

                                        Exactly.

That said, IMO ice hockey has the most impressive assortment of requisite skills among the major team sports that I’m familiar with. Got to have incredibly fast reflexes and hands, be able to deliver and take massive hits, oh and you’re ice skating.
