@Mizmazzle inspiring the next generation with the good things. Well done man

when I was in high school I was super checked out. Only cared about my skateboard and punk rock. I slept everyday in school and was uninterested. I had an English teacher that took the time to make me this tape with some cool bands on in like The Replacements and Minutemen. Bands that were new to me at the time. He tried to connect with me and engage me at my interest level.I didn’t change my behavior much. And it took me another 5-7 years to start getting my head out of my ass…but what the teacher did left an impression on me and even though it took a very long time for the seed he planted to grow, he shaped my future teacher mindset.
By the way, my student who got the records was the most stoked on the Sabbath record…as I figured he would be…kid has great taste already!

Might need to look the other way if he comes back from lunch with bloodshot eyes.....

@GraemeE it’s funny you mention that. Haha. Today I came back to my classroom and there were about 6 boys up to no good kinda goofing off and acting way too odd. I came out of my room about ten minutes later and they were gone but it reeked like weed. Pretty disturbing really.

@Mizmazzle damnit - my whimsical abstract is much less fun when the reality of devoping brains on drugs is a real life scenario
-
@Mizmazzle I feel and I appreciate you sharing that. Seeds tend take time to grow and bear fruit. Good teachers like you are a cornerstone of our community.
That haul would keep me busy for a couple of months if I was your student. Thin Lizzy at his age would blow my mind
-
@GraemeE haha. Naw man. The kid I brought the records to would have the good sense to wait until he was in high school at least and further not smoke refer in the fucking hallway of a middle school. Jesus.
Lord knows I didn’t make the best choices with my early experimentation in the school setting.
-
@Mizmazzle love this (the backstory and the present action)! Just wondering if your teacher ever got to hear how his seed grew.
-
@Mizmazzle that’s such a great story and a testament to how great teachers can influence the trajectory of their students. I had an English teacher my sophomore year of high school who used to write rock lyrics on the blackboard every day before class. First day of class the lyrics were from Bowie’s “Changes”. I can’t name many of my teachers but I sure remember him and his influence on me. I have no doubt that you’re leaving that same kind of impression on your lucky students.

Considering this is one of my favorite albums OF ALL TIME I don't reach for it as much as I probably should.
It's a breath of fresh air

Sgt. Pepper’s wouldn’t exist if it hadn’t been for Pet Sounds.
It was the best kind of arms race (one where everyone wins)
BW has said pet sounds wouldn't exist without rubber soul

@GraemeE what a time for creatives to be exploring what’s possible. I could be convinced that the technological limitations of that era were key to that. I’m sure today’s artists could argue that the expanded “technological palette” just give creators more tools to explore but for me personally it is actually kind of overwhelming

@SKT thanks for the kind words brother man. I really wish I remembered that teachers name. I remember how it felt to have this person go out of their way to try and connect with me and that feeling has left a life long impression on me. But I moved a lot as a kid and was only at that school a short time. Wish I remembered his name…
