How To Use Advanced Search
-
If you are struggling to find something that you think may have been posted before, or that you have seen before and since forgotten, there is an advanced search function which allows you to write more detailed queries and easily filter your results. If you hit the cog symbol next to the search field, you'll be taken to the advanced search function.
You will then be taken to a screen where you can specify the parameters of what you're trying to search for.
Searching by "titles and posts" will return anything that matches you query, either in the titles themselves or within a post. Using this method is a good way to find dedicated threads or posts linked to the denim you may be looking for, for example
You can then filter how your results are displayed and to widen your search results you can match "any word" of a particular query.

Is there a way to search a particular topic for words?
-
You can, actually. Just not from this search function, weirdly. @ManiacLachy When you are in the topic in question, if you him cmd+f (mac, using chrome - may be subtley different on other machines/browsers), then you can search for a word in the specific topic. It just pre-populates the topic ID in the search bar for you

@Alex and @Giles thanks both. On PC I couldn't find a similar command function, but typing in:topic-xxxxx <KEYWORD> into the search bar works as expected.
At first I thought you mean the browser's find function, which is inadequate because it will only look through the posts visible on the page. But this works as I'd hoped - just a little clunky manually typing it. Cheers!

Yeah, this is how i discovered it in the first place!

@Alex This is really helpful! I've been looking for this functionality so it's nice to know there's a code for it. I tried it on Windows (Chrome) and ctrl + f just brings up Chrome's on-page search function (and not the forum thread's search function). Since the current forum viewer seems to only load a section of posts at a time, the browser's search doesn't work well, so I guess I'll try to remember this code for now!

@Alex I made a discovery the other day while exploring my User settings, there's an option to Enable In-Topic Searching, that will use the browser's default search (CTRL-F/CMD-F).
I had to restart my browser for it to work, but now when I try to search on the page in the IH Forum, it will pre-fill the in:topic-xxxx in the search just like your screen shot.
Just a little hidden setting that many may not know about!
