@M800sct1 To be fair, I got caught out in my split steer a few years back in torrential rain and it got fully soaked clean through and it was no worse for wear after drying out again, while it certainly isn't a rain coat it doesn't really need babying either..on the days it's cold but dry this is the king of Type IIIs in my book

@M800sct1 I have the split steer and it functions like a tank in the snow and rain. I took a strip of the split suede from when I had the sleeves shortened and pegged it to my fence in the backyard...its been out there for damn near 10 months in wind, rain, snow, and extreme heat....still feels just the same as the split steer on my jacket itself...

Also, the cotton of the LEfty OD would just soak up rain water like a sponge. The SPlit Steer water just rolls right off for a time until it soaks in....then boom. Dries out good as new.

In the easy chair with my boots on, melted whiskey in my hand. Could'na been asleep for more than three hours...time to go to work again...

I know I certainly have a Pair of Lace Up Boots in Roughout and Engineers in Roughout that have been wet right through on a few occasions and they always brush up as good as new after being allowed to dry naturally at room temperature.

I'm between sizes in Iron Heart Westerns. Standard Indigos normally Large and OD's normally XL. A mix of both sizes in UHF's, Large in Kersey and XL in Serge.
Defo think the Steer would be better to try in the Large allbeit the Chest looks a little neat. The Dimensions of the sleeves along with the waist and opening is putting me off the XL in comparison to my 14 oz OD type lll in XL.

Anyone had the opportunity to try on both the L and XL in the Steer before!?

@M800sct1 I'm a large in every IH shirt I own (quite a few of them at this point)
I have this jacket in a size Large as well. I love the fit because I can easily and comfortably layer it over a UHF and have excellent range of motion still.

I could size down to a medium if I wanted a trimmer fit over a tee shirt only...but I wanted to be able to wear it over a flannel or other IH shirt so large was the way for me...

I did have the sleeves shortened on mine due to the arm length being quite long.

In the easy chair with my boots on, melted whiskey in my hand. Could'na been asleep for more than three hours...time to go to work again...

@M800sct1 can confirm that the split steer does just fine in rain. Despite the similar aesthetics, it isn’t suede.

As for sizing I tried both. I’m a solid XL in shirts and went with XL in the jacket. Could have done an L but would have been restricted to a thin layer under.

Thanks Guys for your comments and insights and apologies for my late reply however was away on a Course with strictly limited access to the modern World for a week or so.
Still undecided from the comments what size to ultimately go for on this Jacket. Want it to fit over a Denim Shirt or UHF mainly, but still to be OK when worn just over a T occasionally. As my shirts are a mix of L and XL the sensible decision may be the XL but still worried its goin to feel too roomy and hangy in the main. Graham what size are you on this Jacket I'm normally similar to you and Olly in general, though a little smaller on some shirts than you sometimes wear. Cheers. Mark

Just had a look at your previous orders - XL all day in this buddy. You will be stuck with no layering possibilities at all if you go with an L I reckon so bump it up to an XL and have the best of both worlds. 🤘

Thanks for that Graham. The sleeves were just scaring me a bit on the XL whilst everything else seams reasonable.
How is the sleeves on you, and if I needed to shorten, who could you suggest I use to do this in the Uk and that you know would make a professional job of it. Also the likely cost of this to factor in.
                        With Thanks.

What I like about the sleeves is that the cuff is quite narrow so they sit at the wrist bone and you get some great bunching at the elbow ditch rather than them hanging over your hands.

Personally have no recommendation re shortening but hopefully, there is an owner in here that has done that and can chime in.

Just dropped off my jacket to the local furrier. This guy has been around forever in my town. As soon as I set it on his table he was like, “wow, this is split cow! This is really heavy and will last the rest of your life!” He was impressed with the jacket.

He’s going to take 1.75” off the cuff end and maintain the length of the side cuff split. Feel a lot better about approaching it this way versus altering from the shoulder.

Get it back next week…stay tuned.

                                I mean….

                                IMG_6634.jpeg

@tody he took off 1.75”…which is nuts. The sleeves still look just a tad long in the pics, but once I lift my arm just a little they come up quickly. Driving etc. they are well above the wrist. So the length functions perfectly.

@ARNC that’s a great question about the scraps. I was kind of thinking about doing some water tests on at least one scrap. See how the split steer holds up to rain and sun etc. Do you have any other ideas?

Against some sound constructive advice, think I'm goin to try the smaller Large Size first as pretty uncomfortable entrusting someone in my vicinity to make a Professional job of shortening the sleeves on the XL.
It may work for me as I very seldom ever fasten a type3 Denim Jacket and this may be be similar.
                                  Cheers.

@M800sct1 yeah man. I had the sleeves shortened. It was really easy and came out great. Can’t tell they were altered at all. It cost me about $70 if I recall. I took it to a furrier to have it done.

I detailed the whole experience pretty thoroughly in this thread. If you go back not too far you can read all about it.

Goin to try the smaller Large as opposed to the XL first I think.
If the other measurements work for me in the Large I may not require to get the sleeves altered whereas the XL would definitely need them altered.
I'm not convinced that I would be able to find someone locally that would make a decent job of shortening the sleeves for me.
                                      Thanks Again.

I was able to get mine sized so that it works great as both a layering piece as well as just over a tee (though it is a bit oversized with just a tee but totally doable still)
