M-65 Sateen vs M-65 Quilted
-
I'm considering a new M-65 jacket and I have questions regarding the difference between the Sateen version (IHM-27-BLK) and the Quilted version (IHM-41-BLK). Specifically the difference in the texture of the exteriors of the jackets. I've never been a fan of Sateen fabrics so I'm leaning toward the seemingly more rugged quilted version. Does anyone out there have experience with these jackets? I'd love to hear your thoughts on looks of the fabrics, feel or weight of jackets overall, and do they run close to UHF sizing? Thanks for your help...

@AdamC has been rocking his Sateen M65 for a good few seasons now!
I've worn both several times, and have to say I prefer the Sateen M65, as I feel it has more "heft" to it. The smooth nature of the face of the fabric isn't something I overly notice.
As for sizing I am a Medium UHF but Small in these jackets. I'd advise measuring up your jackets the Iron Heart way if possible and not judging off your shirt size.
I imagine others will provide their opinions too!

@mrebant to balance out what AJ has said, I picked up the quilted this season as I prefer it over the sateen, removable quilted lining is definitely a plus on versatility and im hoping will extend wear further in the spring than the sateen would go, I also prefer the colour and feel of the fabric; the colour is more 'olive drab' than the sateen and the fabric feels a little more rugged (despite being a little lighter) than the sateen.
but it really is each to their own, I don't think there's a wrong choice between them.
Sizing wise I also went a size down from my normal UHF size, it's a tiny bit snug with lining in but that fine as it means it won't be too baggy when I take the lining out.

Thank you both for your input. As for use in wet weather, I’m told the Sateen version is waterproof where as the Quilted liner version is only water resistant. Is this accurate?

@mrebant The Sateen Jacket has a Ventile liner, but I would not call that Jacket "waterproof". In fact in my experience it gets wet in anything but very light rain. In theory the Ventile prevents (once it is soaked and the cotton fibers expand) additional water coming through. For some critical info on that material see also https://welldresseddad.com/2017/05/20/ventile-ugly-facts-they-dont-tell-you/
So: I own and love this jacket, and would recommend it at any time. Just not as a waterproof jacket. If it rains I go for my dedicated raingear.EDIT: checked on the Ventile website, and it seems that all their products that use a DWR (durable water repellant coating) are now (since 2021) using a PFC-free DWR.

I've been caught in torrential downpours in my Sateen M-65 and was surprised with how dry it kept me!
A wet V shape around the collar of the shirt I was wearing underneath due to water getting in through the collar, but aside from that I was dry throughout.
Jacket took a while to dry off though, I'd imagine the waxed version would be far better on this front...
