This just hit U.K. Netflix this weekend. Mrs H and I just watched it. One of the highest recommendations I can give for a straight action movie in the Taken and Equalizer “older-dude-with-a-very-particular-set-of-skills-comes-out-of-retirement-to-fuck-up-some-bad-dudes” sub-genre.

But imagine those movies with the violence turned up to 11. And then add a bit more blood. Bob Odinkirk kicks some serious ass.

Edit: changed the trailer to one which spoils fewer of the fight scenes.

        Take the dive...

@Matt I think it snuck out during the pandemic, direct to whichever is Universal’s preferred streaming service. I get the feeling if theatres had been open it’d be a word of mouth hit.

I went to watch Oppenheimer on IMAX yesterday…great movie. Very intense ending. Cillian Murphy was superb in the main role, but for me Robert Downey Jr and Emily Blunt were even better. I can only recommend it and go watch on as big screen as possible.

I'm not Matt but Barbie was very good. Richard Brody's New Yorker Review says it better than I can but it is basically a great exploration of the limited political power of imagination boxed into an expertly directed cleverly paced piece of physical theatre. Gerwig smashed it again. Looking forward to seeing Oppenheimer in the next few days.

@Nik One of my mates was an extra in Barbie. Did a scene in which Margot Robbie bursts through a pair of double doors and run down a corridor make it into the final cut? My buddie says that he was dressed in a suit and walking down that corridor while MR runs past him.

About Barbie: what I heard and read is that the movie is definitely NOT a kids movie. It is more political/social.

@goosehd that show was strictly forbidden here. What a vapid and soulless piece of shit that was. We did our best to stave off the inevitable Kardashianification of our girls as long as we could.

@Matt Thankfully not having TV means that the kids have no idea who/what the Kardashian’s are 🙂

It also means that we invest a ton of time into extracurricular activities which are slowly wearing me out, but it keeps the kids out of trouble.

Swimming, sailing, golf, and tennis for right now. Contemplating a martial arts class sometime soon so that they have an understanding of how to defend themselves.

We try to mix it up. Screens are the last resort usually but as they get older we get more tired of entertaining they get more and more of it. Extracurriculars are so expensive and time consuming that we eventually yield to their pleas for quitting after a few months or years if we’re lucky.

That Dreamhouse show was pure hot garbage though. After seeing 5 minutes of it I immediately instituted a ban. That’s why the movie appeals to me and to them frankly. They’re jaded cynics at 9 and 11 so I feel like I’ve done my part.

Even though Barbie has a 12 rating there were lots of kids younger than that in the showing that Clara and I went to. They seemed to enjoy it, even though it definitely is not a kids movie. I think there’s enough physical comedy and fun design elements to keep them interested and the deeper stuff probably just goes over their heads? I’d have no issues taking my kids but then I don’t have any kids.
