Depends on the pace. I ate a clif blok every half hour on my 3:07 Paris marathon. When I did 100k in 10:57 I ate whole sandwiches. Gels are easier in that there's no chewing, but I haven't experienced any digestion issues yet. But these kinds of things are different for everyone and definitely worth practicing regularly to figure out what works.

Thanks for the advice on the other thread @Nik

How do you typically pace the consumption of something like Clif Bloks? During a half marathon for example?

Not @Nik but a half marathon is a hard effort for 90 min for me (I am old), mostly Z4. You have enough glycogen storage and don't need to consume any calories during the event.

On a recent 73 km my pace is a lot slower, basically a long Z2 jog. You are using fat storage and some glycogen. In that settings, "fast" sugars are counterproductive for me and I try to get 200 kcal per hour which seems to be the right mix for energy / avoid GI trouble for me. Gels / Bananas. Only thing I would add is e'lytes for longish and warm. Team mate got admitted to hospital after a hot ultra last year with a Na of 124!

Chafing creams, Vaseline or try different type of shorts. Some prefer half tights. Fortunately I don’t have these issues.

Just me then! Wearing shorts with a tights like lining only, maybe I need something more substantial to 'hold it all together' cause right now I'm torn to shreds ahaha..

Turns out all I needed was to wear boxers shorts haha, 27km and no pain!

Glad that you found something that works. I personally don’t like wearing something below my split shorts but then again I have no issues with chafing.

Any distance over ~10miles and I get terrible chafing of the ol’ ballbag 🥜. After the marathon my groin was bleeding from the chafing. I tried loads of different short/liner/underwear combos, nothing helped. It’s weird cause I don’t really notice while running, it only becomes painful afterwards.

I have always had luck with compression shorts but don't put the distances in that you guys are. Anything that doesn't wick the moisture away and I'm painfully chaffed for days. One thing I did find that would help post chafing is Penaten Cream https://www.penaten.ca

I'll carry an emergency tub of Vaseline as my runs get longer though I think..

Hoping these new Hokas serve me well as my runs get longer. The cheap Brooks pair I've worn for over 500 miles felt so dead, figured it was time for an upgrade.

I'm probably gonna regret getting the whitest of white pairs I could find, but couldn't resist after seeing how clean these looked.

Not the best look with cuffed denim though haha

@T4920 nice, I like the look of Hokas a lot. Are these Bondis? I tried Clifton 8s when narrowing down my marathon shoes, but found their arch to be really high and painful. How do these feel?

These are the Clifton 9s, honestly haven't got much to compare them to cause my last (and first) pair of running shoes were trash.

I'm gonna wear them to work for the next few days and take some long walks in them, then run 30km on Sunday, so I'll give you the verdict then!

@T4920 I started wearing runners with my jeans for comfort and now find it really hard to go back to wearing flat sole sneakers such as my Vans. Genuinely been looking at a pair of Hokas or Salomons to wear casually, I stick to Nike for running

The devil is in the detail..

@AdamJ I've worn Salomon in the past casually, a lot more sleek and stylish than the Hokas in my opinion, but the comfort with these is unmatched. Take your regular size though, and get the wider fit if you have even slightly wide feet! I read online I should size down 0.5 in the Clifton's but I'm very glad I didn't..

Currently the South Downs Way 100 mile race is being run. I marshalled it yesterday. First was at registration from 03:45 to 06:00 attaching the gps trackers to runners’ packs, then drove 22 miles to the first nutrition station to set up and support the runners. Doing this gets me a spot on next year’s event. It’s been hot in this part of the world. 20% of registered runners didn’t show up, twice as many as usual. Out of 339 starters, 192 have either finished or are still running. The cut off is 30 hours and if runners are slower than that pace at check points they get dq’d. it was quite hot yesterday lots of runners were already struggling from the heat at 10:00 and 22 miles in. Saw all ages and types of people running. Pretty inspiring. Looking forward to next year.
