Apologies for lack of news, I think I finally have secured some accommodation close by - it will be basic, but inexpensive and very near.  Am checking it out on Tuesday morning, more details to follow on this and other options.

Just booked a ticket.

I arrive at Heathrow on Friday at 18:45.  Anyone have a similar arrival?

How far in advance must British trains be booked to receive good rates?  Currently, the train from Heathrow to Portsmouth is 28 pounds and the bus is 17 pounds.
