Coronavirus (Covid-19) Discussion
-
Let's try not to politicise these discussions or knock individual leaders. We will all have some views as to how they are handling the situation, but I would not wish the enormity of what they are having to do, on my own worst enemy.
I said to a friend yesterday, this is as big as WW2, he replied, "It's bigger, at least in a war there is always the possibility of a negotiated settlement, we do not have that with Covid-19".
When we are through this, then is the time to analyze how effective our leaders were and make the appropriate actions, oh and for pity's sake, learn from the lessons…

that is very true. the word lockdown is being overused at the slightest negative news you hear. but it doesn't mean it applies to every part of the world. taiwan and singapore are one of the few countries i know that are not in lockdown and are doing very well. does it mean that they're risking lives? definitely not.
what we should focus on is doing our own part regardless of whatever measures each government decides to put in place.

If there's one take away from this so far it's that neither the European systems nor the slightly more private / distributed US system have performed well. (Emphasis on "slightly" because having lived under both systems I can tell you that they're much closer than most people on either side seem to think.)

IDK. I am struggling with this lockdown but I can’t imagine going out into the world right now. I’d risk coming home as a carrier and infecting my 3 month old son, wife and daughter. It angers me that this is gaining traction. Lifting the lockdown I mean. If I’m forced to go back to work my wife would not allow me back in the house and I don’t blame her.

Two meters distance determines our existence!

So sick and tired of sick people coming into the store… It's also so exhausting keeping track of when to clean hands/ disinfect them,... Again and again and again...
Slightly good news for Belgium: 2nd day in a row that the amount of new cases went down... Either our intake of beer protects us better, or we're just extremely lucky, cause ALL our surrounding countries seem to be SOL...

Public Health England produced data to identify where in England people were most likely and least likely to comply with voluntary self isolation guidance live. Suffice to say they did not make this public. No one wants to know that they are the thick idiots that couldn't be trusted to act responsibly. Well now we've all been told.
The list of high Street shops that are exempt from closure has been published. There are those that you'd expect such as food stores and pharmacies. Others include health food stores, bicycle stores, and home/hardware stores.
Apparently mainstream stores are focusing on general needs and can't meet the needs of specialist diets (coeliac etc, not veggie), and health stores can help meet that demand.
The armed forces are currently being mobilised to help with delivering food parcels and provisions to cat 1 at risk self isolators. So please, if you live in the UK and see military vehicles in your streets where you wouldn't usually, please don't panic, they are just helping out.

I think timing is key. Most countries have waited too long with functional measures, whether they were controlling movement, testing, social distancing, whatever. Lockdowns have become increasingly necessary because of this.
i take some of what i said back. singapore has started to see a second wave of new cases partly due to the returning citizens from other countries. now they've moved to ban short term vistors and close entertainment establishments and the likes, where there's a higher chance of transmission. it'll be interesting to see if this works for them.
on the other hand, australia claims that 90% of cases are imported and closed their borders but continue to allow cruise ships to dock and with little checks in place, which doesn't make sense to me.

It's happening in Hong Kong already.

The title is misleading as the only forces that can be used (AFAIK) for such use in the US is the nat'l guard. As I understand it, the Fed is very limited in what it can do (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posse_Comitatus_Act).
