Shirt looks great on you Max!

My feelings on flannel shirts have moved towards erring on the side of "slightly too big." IMO, a flannel shirt isn't supposed to be something that's super trim-fitting, and when I see people on Instagram etc. wearing really trim flannels it looks a bit weird to me now.

I'm tall and skinny and when I look back on pictures of myself wearing a Flat Head shirt in size 40 it just really accents how relatively unusual my proportions are… but wearing a 3Sixteen flannel in L (roughly corresponds to this shirt's sizing) makes me look more proportional overall.

      Here here QFT

      Maybe so. Maybe not

Curious to know which vitals seem to work best for larger sizes like the XXL.

Unless you’re very short or tall then chest is always the most important in my view.

Interesting post. I’m inclined to agree with you and prefer work shirts in UHF or other heavier/thicker fabrics precisely because of the points you make. Denim, chambray and other lighter/thinner fabrics are great in the western.

I fluctuate between L and XL with IH flannels. Most in my closet are L but I do have a few XL’s. It’s important to remember too that there are always variances in sizing with each release. As long as I hit that sweet spot of 22” to 22.5” in the chest then I’m golden.

Great discussion!  And Max, it looks great on you.

My opinion, the UHF, when sized correctly, can have a slimming effect.  I have both XL and L.  My IHSH-126-PB is an XL with buttons, and the buttons around my chest look like they have pressure on them, in fact the mid clavicular button becomes unbuttoned sometimes.  My IHSH-207 is a L with copper snaps.  The material is thick enough to not show things like nipples (yeah, I went there [emoji1787]), and the copper snaps are tough and don’t show any stress.  With that said, I recently got some XXL UHFs from the outlet.  In Alaska, it reaches -45F, and I’m looking forward to being able to layer with the UHFs [emoji3587].

I’ll preface this by making it it clear that my personal opinion is just that and worth no more than any others, but button pull on th top two buttons is a deal breaker for me. I’d be an L in most IH shirts if I could tolerate button pull but it just looks daft to me.

One thing that @DrPat  has said on this forum a few times and @tvenuto has developed is that workshirts are better on broader, bigger guys and while there are always exceptions I’ve come to see the sense in that.

Sizing up for layering IH is one of the joys of living in the cold north for me, whether it is shirts vests or jackets.

The button pull scenario seems common but that to me is indicative of incorrect fit. A couple of my L UHF’s do this but only because I gained a little weight. I simply keep the top snap undone.

I have never experienced 'button pull, but I think that permex snaps fitted to UHFs gives the appearance of  button pull anyway, see the pics above. My reservations about buying workshirts in UHF are for the opposite to @neph93 , showing just how subjective these things are. I have always been concerned at how well catseye type buttons will hold in button holes with material this thick, and not pop out. Thats why I have always stuck with the snaps on westerns for UHF, and workshirts for chambray.

I have my first UHF workshirt arriving tomorrow, so I'll be able to give a better view of my comparative thoughts then.

I’m talking obvious gaps and fabric distortion as a result of the chest being too small. I think it happens regardless of snaps or buttons but I’d imagine snaps are likely to make it more pronounced as they are fixed, whereas the physics of buttons/buttonholes allow for more wiggle room.

Never had an issue with buttons on UHF’s with the exception of an acknowledged issue on a shirt from a number of years ago where all the shirts had slightly large holes and the buttons had a tendency come out. A hot wash fixed it.

I do indeed have one sh131 that has a tendency of the buttons easily unfastening but it could easily be fixed.
Regarding sizing I think it's important to know your crucial areas and measurements. For me it's the shoulders. Anything below 19 is too tight and annoys me as it is too constricting. Unfortunately last year and this year the XL shoulders often were below 19" so I need to size up. And I agree on flannels better fitting a bit loose than like a dress shirt.

The 238 would have had better measurements for me but I prefer the snaps over buttons, unless there will be a UHF with metal buttons one day. The 170 is just glorious.

That’s the one. Wearing it right now in fact. My first, and probably favourite, flannel.

That is truly a fantastic shirt. I’ve considered asking to buy the aluminium buttons to upgrade my IHSH-225. Either that or go for some GA pimpage.

@neph93 I think that most of the western shirts I see have this "button pull" effect. In most of these pictures, I've noticed that the button pull effect on the shirts, even when they aren't on. Unless you're talking about something else. Like the button looks like it might burst any moment.  😃
