I just picked this up in the outlet. I want to shrink it a bit. If I want to get the most shrinkage, should I use a machine washer on hot or soak it? I don't know why I read it, but I heard agitation helps shrink the fabric. Anyone have any experience?

I would follow the advice for UHR soaking/washing to get max shrinkage with minimum risk of marbling or abrasion lines.

You’ll find the «recipe» in the CARE info on the website and on various UHR threads, but the short version is:

                  • Soak in hot water for not more than two hours.

                  • Turn inside out and put straight in the washing machine while wet.

                  • Wash on very low rpm at about 40C. You can also take the jacket out before the spin cycle starts.

                  • Straighten any creases in the jacket then air dry on a hanger or flat dry.

If you follow the physics, then max shrinkage will occur when as much tension as possible is released from the weave, so you need to lubricate the fabric to reduce the friction as much as possible….  This will happen when you introduce hot soapy water and agitation.....

Is there any risk of marbling @Giles? For example, but I washed it in hot water with soap on a low spin. I have a front loading machine, so there is no agitator in the middle.

Always a risk.  If you soak in hot water first (as per the Neph post) and wash inside out and do not spin, you will minimize the risk, but not eradicate it…

I'll try a long, hot soappy soak first and make to agitate it a lot. I'd rather avoid any marbling and, given the shrink results of this jacket on the first page, that might be enough.

Before and after. Did a hot soak for an hour then a hot wash. It marbled a bit but I am pleased with the results. May do another hot soak to try and get a little more shrink.

+1 post soak fit pic is brilliant. Love the length and trim silhouette.

Marbling is hard to avoid and not necessarily an ugly issue anyway. Abrasion lines in unfortunate places can be worse. They all work themselves out with wear and tear anyway.
