In addition to the longhorn herd, there’s a herd of bison.  This park is pretty legit.  Apparently the area they hang out in is achingly beautiful but off limits to the public.  This is the way…

The little one is only 3 weeks old.  It’s a bit late in the year for calves but the attendant doing the feeding said they just let them be and allow nature to take its course. They’ve got about 400 acres on which to roam

San Angelo St Pk has about 50 miles  of trails.  Today’s hike was on the 3 mile Winding Snake Trail.  The girls did great which gives us hope for the trails at Big Bend…

We’ve yet to spot a javelina but the signs were everywhere.  They eat the prickly pear cactus fruit so their poop is bright red with lots of seeds.  There were also lots of prints near small trails they make leading from the trail back into the brush…

Looks great, Matt! I love all the old abandoned buildings in West Texas. I always find myself stopping to check out dilapidated old buildings and weird truck stops. If you find yourself on the 40 consider checking out Cadillac Ranch and its low rent step brother, Slug Bug Ranch. You can't forget the Prada store in Marfa as well. Here's a few pics of my last drive through. I also did some paintings of locations like that because I found them so weirdly compelling. So different from other pars of the country!

There are definitely some wide open spaces out here, that’s for sure.

All the small towns we drive through or visit have some quality murals or remnants of wall advertising.  I like that kind of stuff as well and Cadillac Ranch is on our radar, as is Marfa.

This was a productive stop. We took advantage of the larger town to finish our Xmas shopping.  We got a little fake tree and some lights/decorations that we’ll start putting up this week.  The kids were worried about Xmas out here but the success of Thanksgiving has changed their tune.

Dugout Wells was a settlement inside the park.  Cottonwood trees grow here indicating underground water that runs off from the Chisos Mountains.  Lots of different cactus species.  Saw my 2nd roadrunner but they are too fast to get my phone out in time…
