Wtf is a purple yam? What is it doing in a doughnut? Is this normal?

A purple yam is basically a purple sweet potato that's sweeter than the orange version. It's apparently used a lot in Filipino desserts. I guess it's started to spread to other places, too. Probably because it's a really eye catching color.  The doughnuts in question here are malasadas, a light, airy Portuguese version.  Malasadas are popular in Hawaii, probably as a result of Portuguese laborers being brought into the state in the late 1800s to work in the sugar cane plantations.  Using Filipino ingredients makes sense- Filipinos were brought into Hawaii in the early 1900s as laborers for the sugar cane plantations (seeing a trend here?).

So to answer your last question- yeah, it kinda is 🙂

@Chris you are so lucky you aren’t Gen Z. That delicious post-colonial treat is just a culturally appropriated time bomb waiting to go off (on TikTok).

Also, I want one. Now.  Thank you for the Wikipedia level answer. I loved it.

I thought a pedantic answer would appeal to you.  😃  And to be moreso-
No cultural appropriation here; the Leonard of Leonard's Bakery was the grandson of Portuguese contact laborers who came to Hawaii in 1882. The bakery has been in operation since 1952.  Filipinos are one of the largest ethnic groups in the state, so I would argue that the pastry in question is a wholly authentic expression of modern Hawaii's diversity.

          But I'm probably wrong. I often am…

I was attempting irony. Some of the conversations I’ve had with my GenZ kids and their friends regarding cultural appropriation and cancel culture are hysterical. Mostly white, middle class, well off Norwegians trying to make sense of the world are cute (which is a über-boomer thing for me to say).

If you don't happen to find any around your parts, I'll be sure to bring treats during the party in Sept if you can wait that long. Ube (Filipino purple yam) is used in a plethora of various traditional desserts but have been adapted to the western pallet as of late (cheesecake, soft cookies, ice cream, etc)](https://www.ironheart.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=397)

Yesterday and today I was here

This is Kualoa Ranch.  If you've seen any of the Jurassic Park/World movies, King Kong: Skull Island, Lost, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, and too many other things to name, then you've seen it. It's spectacular. Unfortunately, I didn't go there to do the many wonderful and fun tourist things they offer. Instead, I went to to make myself hurt. Because I'm an idiot, obviously.

Oh, and to keep the delicious, but culturally appropriative aspect of my contributions going, here's my dinner

It's a Korean yakiniku pizza, with marinated grilled short rib, mozzarella, kimchee, and Tokyo negi. And yes, it was fantastic and yes, I ate the entire pizza.

@Madame Buttonfly  and I decided to explore Forton Lake, for anybody who has been it is the tidal creek at the end of the road.  It has always been a bit of a mystery to me, because much of it is bounded by Ministry of Defence land, so it is difficult to see from the shore.  Well, with kayaks, no such problems…Seems like a veritable dumping ground for old hulks, probably no different from many other tidal creeks in the first world.....

I just love these early morning dog walks this time of the year. It's not cold, but a bit chilly (read UHF weather) and humid. The first sunrays light up the trees and warm you up just a little bit, and it's peacefully calm, just you and and the dog and the fresh smell of the forest.

Took the wife and kids to experience the MOTOGP at Silverstone this weekend. Colder than we'd expected, but for my wife to say she had an amazing day, that really sums it up. We sat in the Village B grandstand overlooking the loop, and the noise these machines emit climbing to full chat down Wellington Straight is still ringing in my ears. WOW!
Was good to chat to the girls and boys on the Harley Stand between races, and try out for size the new Triumph speed twin.
