I always find it fascinating that people who do some DIY Stuff at home wear knee protection and pros dont even tough they are a hundred times more often on their knees, thats just unreasonable.

On a brighter sight a ordered a bunch of festool stuff today thats always a little christmassy.

Warning: This is a bit of a downer post, but it is relevant. Not looking for "sorry about your friend" etc.

I had a very good friend who died recently and was in construction all his life. He didn't use safety/protective gear as many pro's don't and before he died, he had very little hearing left, couldn't walk any distances because of bad knees, he'd ruined his back, and had bad lungs despite never having smoked. He was in his 50's when he died and killed himself. There were lots of reasons for that but one of them was that he couldn't accept his deteriorating health. He thought he'd be this big, badass building guy forever.

There are currently guys working on my house now in their 20's who are operating bandsaw's and concrete cutters all day with no breathing or hearing protection. There is a macho culture in that industry which is seriously dangerous.

Youre absolutley right @neph93 I always tell my guys to wear their saftey shoes, hearing aid and to use a proper dust collection whenever there is sawdust or drywalldust around, thats the dumbest way possible to ruin your health. The pro tool companies really try to push that and it seems to work at least a little.

The "newest" thing around is a dust collection for the bucket you mix concrete or filler in because you breath in tons while pouring and mixing that stuff and it is crazy toxic, old construction guys have lung and skin deseases from handeling concrete without any caution.

it's a work smarter situation IMO. Want your knees to hold up, might be smart to work in kneepads. Want lungs, ears, and eyes that serve you well long into life, protect em. To each their own though…

I totally agree as well–- ask the pros and they will almost always wear the protective gear.
Im not even sure what it is with SOME people---almost like they look at safety as a sign of weakness or something?
I will never understand that weird wiring.

I always wear a mask and ear defenders. My mate who I work with refuses to wear a mask because he would have to take his fag out of his mouth. [emoji23]

I don’t like knee pads much, I prefer to kneel on a piece of foam.

I have a pair of Blåkladder's high end work pants that have a pocket that takes knee pads and holds them where they should be. That is the only time I use them, otherwise, a bit of foam is my preferred solution too.

Honestly, all props go to a good amount of the guys I've met & worked alongside over the years (especially when I first started) who not only advocated safety first but set the example. They definitely regret being stupid & reckless when they first started & every day is a reminder of that. Least to say, their stories left a lasting impression on me.

For the most part I always wear hearing protection & N95 for any job I'm on. When necessary that includes hi-vis, hard hat, respirator, gloves, boots, & eye protection. I do admit to rarely using knee pads unless I'm actually doing flooring tho  😶
