In Canada, the washing machines here don't have an option to regulate the exact temperature.  It's either a hot or cold wash.

I've been cold washing all my denim for as long as I can remember.  If I need to shrink denim, the hottest it'll get is what comes out of the tap.

I don't plan on doing any hot washes…

What about when they get dirty? A machine wash at 40C will still shrink them. If you plan on never letting them see water or being moved around in water then OK, but water plus agitation (which you need to get them clean), will cause shrinkage.

For a correct hem, the best method is to take the shrinkage out, then get them hemmed. Otherwise you are reliant on guess work and in the worst case you risk hemming too much so that when they shrink they end up too short. Hem too little pre soak and you just have to do it again.

The only reason to wear first and shrink later imho is to take some of the discomfort put of the break in post soak/wash.

These stretch back out to pre soak measurements on the whole. Some dimensions that are not put under pressure won’t, but the waist will. So of they fit you in the waist now then you’ll be fine. If they fit you comfortably in the knee and thigh now they will return to that with wear also.

I soaked mine before wearing and have double cuffed them. Black denim means the cuff doesn’t stand out, even if a little large, as would be the case with blue denim.

Warm. For thirty mins. As advised on here. Get the shrinkage out.

Cold will mean 30-40C. Heat only plays a marginal role in shrinkage. Agitation is as least as important. A 40C wash in a machine will create as much if not more shrinkage as 50-60C soak in a tub without movement.

Either way, the point of my post was, you are going to have to get them wet and get shrinkage out at some point. Your machine wash or you hot soak will shrink them. Why wait?

Just got a pair of these in the mail today and need some advice on the fit. I think the legs are perfect for what I'm going for, but it was a real struggle getting them buttoned and the waist is definitely tight and a little uncomfortable. I also need to hem a few inches off, because right now the excess length combined with the initial stiffness makes it impossible to get them pulled up enough to try them on with my boots.

These are a size 29 from an earlier run with the old patch that I tracked down at Division Road, and the waist measures just over 16" (I was intentionally seeking either a 29 with a larger than typical waist, or a 30 with slimmer than typical legs). Based on the measurements I'm seeing here, even if I size up to 30 it doesn't look like I'll find a pair with a bigger waist. And I don't really want the legs to be any wider. So should I keep these or no?

I've only tried them on for a few minutes, so I'm hoping they will get more comfortable as they stretch and softer. It's been almost 10 years since I bought a pair of serious jeans (mostly wear Rick Owens, BBS, and CCP pants these days), so I'm having a hard time remembering what a brand new pair feels like.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

EDIT TO ADD: I've actually got a gap in the back rise of a good inch or more, it's just in the front that's feeling quite snug.

It’s impossible to tell what’s happening with the waist of the jeans in these pics. 21oz. Sbg will shrink when you wash it, and then will stretch back out again to the prewash measurements, maybe a little more. If they’re already uncomfortable, they may be too small.

Everything in life is a trade off. I guess you have to decide which,if any, aspect of the fit you can be most flexible about. If you can deal with the level of discomfort at the waist then you get the look your going for in the legs. Even if you went up a size in the waist I can’t imagine the difference in the legs would be that much difference. This is probably no help. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I perhaps should have mentioned in my original post that I don't intend to ever wash or soak these. I don't think I've ever washed a pair of jeans, actually. I tend to spot clean or dry clean if necessary. The most I've ever done with water is a cold soak in a tub with no agitation.

They will probably stretch a bit. Maybe even up to an inch if under pressure.  Jett is right that a size up won’t be too crazy big a difference in the rest of the legs, though.

The leg looks great. What has been said in the previous comments is bang on. You will get an inch stretch. I had a pair of these and was in the same boat as you and the waist does stretch. The denim is stubborn though so it will take a while. Whether an inch will be enough only you can decide.

EDIT: just read your edit… judging by that i think what your experiencing is the resistance of new denim. If you have an inch in the waist already you should be good.

Thanks man. I ended up keeping them on for about 45 minutes or so and they felt a lot better toward the end. Not what I'd call comfortable, but tolerable. I think the stiffness is more of a factor than the actual tightness.

I think I'm going to power through and stick with them. If going up one size to a 30 got me an extra inch I'd probably do it, but this particular pair of 29s measured larger than any of the 30s I came across so I'd have to go to a 31 to really get any more room in the waist and I think it would ruin the fit elsewhere. If nothing else, these might motivate me to lose some of the COVID weight I've packed on this year.

I think you’re probably right. Had another look at your pics and the leg looks great. I really dig your style in general.

What's up guys, this is my first post on the forum.

I have had a pair of IH-555-03s for a little over 3 months and just did a hot soak. They shrunk down a bit and I'm just wondering if that is all the shrinkage to be expected? I want to get them hemmed but I'm curious if I need to wait until I wash them before hemming.

                                Appreciate any help/advice!
