@AdamJ:

Just because something is resilient does not mean it should be treated with disregard IMO

@AdamJ absolutely. As a species we have the capacity to be incredible, or devastating. We don't have to have a race to the bottom.

Individually we are insignificant to the planet, just worm food, as a swarm, we are a plague that strips it bare. We have become convinced by those with vested interest that is the price that must be paid for progress… Progress meaning the aspiration we are sold by marketing people.

We can be better, we can aspire to be different. Us men can be the worst. We seem to confuse masculinity, self-determination, and autonomy as an arrogant right not to be told what to do. We then become our own worst enemies. It is OK not to aspire to be the alpha in every situation. We don't have to repeat the mistakes of our parents, parents, parents.

    There, random rant.

Depends of course….CEO of BP recently decided to aim to migrate his company to carbon neutral, a few individuals founded Friends of the Earth, Greta went on strike etc..

I'm in the process of interviewing for one of the big tech companies in Silicon Valley.

The process has been a first round technical screen, which I somehow passed. The next week I've got two coding sessions, one on design, and a behavioural interview.

The technical screen and the coding interviews next week are all based around algorithmic questions. There's are websites such as leetcode that have examples of the sorts of problems that I'll be faced with.

The trouble is that the standardised questions mean that a cottage industry has grown up around preparing for this interviews, and as a result candidates are expected to spend a significant amount of time preparing. A hundred hours was mentioned to me…

Interview three will be behavioural. I'm autistic and never get on with these sorts of things. 😞

Interview four will be a design exercise. From what I can gather from watching a YouTube video, this is likely to have vague or ambiguous assumptions. Guess what people on the spectrum don't get on with?

Still, it's a great opportunity, particularly for someone whose career died in a ditch five or six years ago. It's just a shame that the Coronavirus thing is going on, as I'd have been heading to SF next week.

Best of luck to you, Graeme!!

I’m certainly very far from that world, but my impression is that the more forward thinking startups may have someone like a diversity officer on their HR staff. This may mean that the company will be able to put a little bit of thought into working with staff who isn’t neurotypical. Are you working with a recruiter? Would it be worth mentioning these things during the interview process?

Like I said, I don’t know jack—but I do wish you all the best.

                  Thanks @sabergirl.

Atlassian had a head of diversity and inclusion (Aubrey Blanche, who's now moved to Culture Amp), but when they interviewed me it was a standard HR screening call which I didn't get past. I didn't disclose being autistic to them, maybe I should have done.

Microsoft have a recruitment programme for those on the spectrum. I'm tempted to put in an application, but it's for jobs in the US and Australia has basically shut its borders in both directions until Covid-19 blows over.

If you disclose that you're autistic does that change the interview process? I know for a job with the US Federal Govt it does, we have a robust EEO system.

I don't know what is set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Association, but it might be worth looking into?

My brother in law is disabled and he qualifies for a bunch of stuff through the ADA.

@Graeme lots of tech companies specifically target and recruit people who live with autism, as there are characteristics that excel in the tech industry.

@DougNg I mentioned it in passing to my recruiter after the first round, but the process doesn't seem to have changed. So who knows…

                        Thanks for the suggestion. 🙂

@Stuart.T thanks for the link. It looks like SAP and Microsoft are the leaders here.

A handful of years ago, a good friend of ours asked if I might be able to help out with some transporting of luggage. Excitedly happy to help, I saw this as an opportunity to help out someone who looked out for me time and time again, I jumped at the chance and did the solid. As a small thanks, Giles hooked me up with a small drawstring bag and another, small orange bag (that I currently have for boxed ammo at home). But it was the drawstring bag that has been used, loved, turned to for quick trips and countless other applications that I have deemed it worthy for in the past few years. I say all that to say Thank you. For your kindness, your understanding, your friendship and how incredible and easy it is to feel connected with IH and beyond. Madame Buttonfly and Giles I hope you two have been safe and sound and in good spirits. Know that I think of y’all often. Hope to be more present around these parts again. And finally, here is the bag, countless uses, countless washes.

It's probably not a lot of help at this stage. I interview on Monday and Tuesday, so I wouldn't get a reply before then.

                              Thanks. 🙂

WTF…. I've been watching the interactive and live updated ups tracking website all day for my ihj-84.

Seeing the truck drive around all day within 1-2 miles of my house with a scheduled delivery by 9pm, only to see the mfer head back to headquarters at 8:45pm..... first world problems and I know those guys/gals are saints right now bringing packages to many needy people, but WTF. It's 8:55 and they are back at ups, when they could have stopped at my house on the way and been back by 8:58...

Thanks for all of the advice. Unfortunately I didn't get the job in the end. 😢

No real feedback was given, but I didn't think that the design interview went well, and I'm terrible at behavioural questions.

Ah well, there are other companies…
