I hiked into the Superstition Mountains of Arizona this morning  with the intention to run the 12 mile ridge trail. About 30% of it was runnable, the rest was filled with scrambling, route finding and cactus dodging.. great day non the less… the desert can be a beautiful place.

You should drive a couple hours north and run up in the Coconino National Forest.  Mid December might not be the ideal time, admittedly.

                      The desert is mysteriously beautiful!
Although I prefer the lush forest of the PNW it was fun to see a change of scenery…
The rock outcroppings where almost extra terrestrial.

In a rush to get a new roof for our clay oven at the ranch before the rains take over.
Started carrying in palm tree trunks. Copernicia alba is the species we use and we’ll get lifespan of about 15 years.

Then we split them longitudinally in halves. Two surgically precise ax men are needed here.

Palm trunks are used for some of the roof structure also. It doesn’t last beyond six years in the ground so we use other wood for the pillars.

The split trunks are hollowed out and work as a long upside-down tile.

Don Jose, 70 years old is in charge of the proceedings.

This is what it looks like when all the palm work is finished.

To finish it off we need to lay clay tiles on top. I’ll send a pic when we get there.

Sorry for the last two flipped pics. Don’t know why it happened and don’t know how to fix it.

                        The journey is the objective.

Great stuff. I build a bit with timber at home but it is all pre-cut. I’d love to work on something from the logs up. You still see the occasional cabin being built like that here.

This is was I was doing for the past 17 days. The Saturday after Thanksgiving we flew to Paris. Went to Montmarte and bought a painting by the below artist. Also saw 2 US artists painting Paris street scenes which is something I would like to do.

Then left Paris on the day of the strike, on an uncancelled Eurostar. Went to a friends 60th birthday party and met some nice new friends. Then on Monday 9 December, we spent a great day in Gosport, not an oxymoron, Spent the afternoon / evening drinking lots of wine with the Padmores, then @Giles made a great Chicken with sundried tomatoes dinner. All in all a great day.

Next year we may tackle a bigger challenge as we attempt a shed for the farm machinery using as much local resources (palms) as possible. That’ll be a 20 by 25 meter structure approximately, with a 4 to 5 meter height.

So you’ll have an opportunity then @Aetas !
