It is generally considered a good idea. Otherwise focusing on the pretty is a good strategy, as is resisting the temptation to drink and be reclusive. Being social and active is important.

I hiked into the Superstition Mountains of Arizona this morning  with the intention to run the 12 mile ridge trail. About 30% of it was runnable, the rest was filled with scrambling, route finding and cactus dodging.. great day non the less… the desert can be a beautiful place.

You should drive a couple hours north and run up in the Coconino National Forest.  Mid December might not be the ideal time, admittedly.
