Casio are bringing out a titanium version of the G-Shock. It's got a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating, which makes it black and imbues it with a rubber like texture. The mineral glass of the original has also been upgraded to sapphire. So has the price, to ¥150,000, about $1400.

I've had this one for a few years and it's my favorite square G-Shock

              https://www.seiyajapan.com/products/g-gw-s5600-1jf

It's a Japan exclusive but it's not difficult to find in the West.

I've swapped out the bezel and band for a standard set for a more toned down look

It's lighter than a standard square because of the titanium caseback, and the alarm is louder because it's a thinner caseback.

              A good video on it:

I’m not sure the one Giles has is a standard one…looks like it has a metal bezel?

Maybe, but your G-Shock will outlive and outlast 99% of the watches in this thread with hard use.

It doesn’t. That’s why modern pistols are made out of plastic.

We went through this with the gun market in the 80s and 90s with pistols when glocks showed up, then the knife market went through this with folding knives in the late 2000s.

Metal has a memory with impact, so it dents. Plastic doesn’t have that problem, it flexes back. Metal is still used when there are high heat applications so slides and barrels are still metal. Metal also takes a sharper edge than plastic so blades are still metal. Metal has a higher abrasion resistance than plastic too.

Depends on your application, but metal is not universally tougher than plastic.

If you’re going to be bashing your watch around a lot, plastic is better. A metal bracelet will eventually deform and plastic will just scuff.

Edited to add: if you're talking about plastic off gassing to the point where it becomes brittle, your G-Shock will be just as fucked as the rest of ours. Underneath your metal bezel the housing is made out of a plastic. Depends on the plastic, but I believe it takes decades for the plastic that G-Shock uses to degrade.

I like the previous generation better. It's so...loud...I guess it would fit in if I lived in Miami and wore lots of shiny clothes.

Also tried on a few Carl F. Bucherer watches because of the John Wick connection...no, just no. They're fucking huge. Thought if I slapped it I would turn into a giant robot.

Went into the Rolex boutique too and they basically had bare cases. They're pushing the drought pretty hard. From what I can gather from social media people are getting tired of their shit. I had a fistful of cash not long ago for a Pepsi GMT but didn't want to play their stupid games, wound up spending it on a bunch of other stuff.

I think that Rolex is trying to regain control of the brand/image.  The Grey market dealers and flippers were making it impossible to buy watches that were in demand without paying a premium.  Jewelry stores then started the if you want to buy a Daytona (or any other hot watch), you go on a list or buy this watch you don’t want and then we will sell you the watch you do.

I hope that this is just a short term blip (5 years) in sales/marketing and will return back to some sort of sanity.
