John Wick 3 - Yep, it does what it says on the tin. 😎 With some outrageous action-scenes and bodycount probably in the 100+ territory, this movie leaves fans of the genre (and this particular series) wanting very little… And the ending strongly suggests there’s more to come. The story wasn’t the strongest and I would’ve liked to see more of Halle’s character, but it’s an easy thumbs up from me.

Speaking of Keanu, I recently watched 47 Ronin and boy was that terrible. The addition of mythological creatures certainly didn't help it but I also didn't understand why Keanu's portrayal of a 'half breed' was even necessary. The only upside is that at least the main cast were Japanese actors.

I could be wrong, but on its surface things like 47 Ronin and The Last Samurai with Westerners playing heroic roles in the middle of sacred Japanese cultural context just seem like the worst kind of cultural appropriation to me. And I can only assume 47 Ronin is at least as noxious as that turd The Last Samurai. I can't even remember how I wound up watching that one in the first place, as the very concept seemed awful when I saw the trailer.

            Think it, be it.

That was my thought as well. On top of that, I can’t believe the Japanese actors even agreed to star in a movie that embellished Japanese history.

Embellishment of history is it’s own sub genre in Asian cinema.

I used to watch a ton of Chinese movies and they were all period pieces with fantastical creatures.

Batman being the only superhero franchise I'm remotely interested in, this is not good news; having said that, it's also not the worst possible news, as Pattinson showed some relevant qualities in Cosmopolis (2012). Wait and see, then.

I'm conflicted. I think Pattinson is a capable actor but playing Batman might be a stretch. But then again, I remember when Daniel Craig was criticized when he got the role of James Bond in Casino Royale and turned out to be the best Bond ever. Pattinson would have to pack on some serious muscle for this role but I think his age might be a harder sell. Bruce Wayne has always struck me as an older captain of industry rather than some fresh faced young guy right outta college. Maybe Pattinson will surprise everyone.

@gaseousclay I've heard a rumour that the new Batman film is supposed to be set in the nineties, so it's a prequel featuring a younger Bruce Wayne.

In any case he's about the same age as Christian Bale was in Batman Begins, and that didn't turn out too badly.

                              In other movie news…

The Terminator franchise has basically been remaking the same film for years, and so far this one hasn't deviated from the template. I'm not sure how they could shake things up. Either expand the universe, as Blade Runner 2049 did, or go full mental like Mad Max Fury Road.

Of course, I'll go see it anyway. 😃

Not sure about other cultures, but as far as Japan goes I'd argue that depends on genre, and may be specific to anime. Show me a Kurosawa film with a Western protagonist, for example. And looking outside Japan, films like Hard Boiled have, at least to my recollection, an entirely Asian cast.

We watched the girl in the spider's web. We enjoyed it. There is a really original sniper scene that was well 'executed'…It brought a few nice new ideas to an otherwise exhausted genre.
