        I love unbranded fliegers.

Y'all see the new Grand Seiko "thin" dress watches with manual winding and a screw-down crown? Odd ducks. At least they oriented the power reserves correctly, though the layout seems cluttered. I understand that they were probably going for symmetry between the small seconds and power reserve complications with the horizontal alignment, but I think the small seconds perhaps would be better situated at 6 o'clock. And the price points are confusing.

        https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/grand-seiko-elegance-collection-slim-hand-wound-limited-editions-introducing

Really love the brand. They helped themselves by getting rid of the superfluous "Seiko/Grand Seiko" branding, but I personally think they need to do the following:

        • Design power reserve indicators into an intuitive orientation.

        • Move power reserve indicators to the back of the movement on transparent-cased watches. Especially when there's an automatic 3-day+ power reserve, this is unnecessary clutter on the dial.

        • Movements and cases should be thinner. Calling a depth of 11.6mm on a manual watch "thin" is embarrassing. Given their technical know-how and vertical integration, it's surprising that they don't produce extremely thin dress watches to rival the Swiss.

        • Quit going to the trouble of exhibition case backs if they're going to then obscure the movement with lion graphics.

        • I hear a lot of complain about their bracelets. While I don't have an issue with them, perhaps given the volume of complaints they should look into it. I do like their oyster-like bracelet and think that it should be used more often (it's almost always the Speedy-like variant).

        • I know that they claim their titanium bracelets do better with pins, but I think they should figure out how to have screws for adjustment links unless they want to knock a few hundred dollars off the asking price.

        Think it, be it.

Those GS are lovely but I think the pricing is out of wack. I also find the gold GS in the otherwise all-blue-and-silver steel model a bit jarring.

What I find interesting is that they have spent a lot of time building the brand on the basis of highly facetted & polished cases and here they have a rounded, frosted finish..

Call me simple if you will, but what the fuck is the point of a power reserve?  If you are wearing the watch and moving, it's going to have power, if not, you pick the fucker up occasionally and shake it.  If you forgot, then it'll stop, but it's not like firing up a Saturn Rocket to get it going again….

Rolex have a lot of photos on their Instagram feed of the Milgauss, including this very retro model.

They often use it as a way of teasing a new model in the run up to Baselworld. There was speculation that the Milgauss might be refreshed last year, as it hasn't been updated in years. This very cool concept was doing the rounds back then, which owes a lot to the above.

Of course, you won't be able to buy one, unless you pay twice RRP to the flippers! 😛

These are manual watches, so it's a bit more understandable. But does it warrant dial real estate when there's an exhibition back? I think not. And a screw down crown on a manual that doesn't have a high degree of water resistance or a long power reserve is daft.

Grand Seiko is one of my favorites, but they can be frustrating too.

Meh. The Milgauss with the green crystal is probably my favorite Rolex model. This one does not impress me.

Not that I was in the market for one, anyway…
