Yeah, that's true, you don't see a lot of flannels around here anymore.  It's all hyper short pants and really baggy shirts.  I'm okay with not being a part of that fad 😃

That's one of the reasons I invest in IH stuff.  The style is classic.  In 10 years, people won't be wearing pants 2" above their shoes, but a denim jacket type III jacket will still be practical and look good.

Totally. That's another thing I need–some Iron Heart Type 3s. I got rid of all mine. I went through a phase where I only bought type 1 & 2 and sold all my type 3s because they were too modern. At least that allows me to get some IH ones without feeling guilty. Also, LA side note, have you noticed that many people dress ironically here? I am a college professor (please don't judge me because of any typos), and all of my young students seem to dress in purposefully horrible clothing. It's like living in an Urban Outfitters. I had a student wear a Space Jam tee. Space Jam. SPACE JAM. It came out before he was born. I mean, it's a modern classic, but still... 😃

Haha, yes, urban-outfit all of the things 😃  The fashion seems to be to spend big money on stuff that looks like it came out of the trash.  And over-sized grandpa sneakers.  I won't judge.  I wore awful baggy pants in my youth 🙂

If you're looking at the type IIIs, I always recommend the 2526J.  That brown duck is gorgeous!  And goes so well with blue jeans.

If you don't mind sharing, what do you teach?  And where?

I've had my eye on that brown duck. Once it gets a little colder, I might have to pull the trigger.

I teach at LA City. It's kind of near Korea Town. I live in East LA, though. Highland Park area if you know it.

What do you do? Why just part time here?

That's cool!  I used to take the train from Union Station to Old Town Pasadena (Del Mar train stop), so I've got that "Highland Park Station" automated robot tone ingrained in my head 😉  Are you teaching a mix bag of subjects or something in particular?

I do computer/network work for a marketing company in Playa Vista.  I live in Orange County but I drive up here 3 days a week.

Nice. While I grew up in San Diego, I lived in Costa Mesa for many years, down near the Back Bay. Love it.

As for teaching, I was hired for developmental English, but I teach creative writing and literature (mainly modern fiction).

LOL, I grew up in Costa Mesa!  My mom still lives there.  Close to South Coast Plaza.

As an instructor of creative writing, what are your top 3 fiction books?

Hmm. Good question. I cannot do just three. These were the ten that came to mind. I didn't put any thought to the order. I just thought of the books that I loved reading and will read again. That was my criteria.

There are other UHF owners here that live in the South like @manufc10 and @Appfaff. It really depends on your tolerance to cold. I live in Minnesota so UHF's are essential for me when temps dip below 20, but I do like likeweight flannel as well for the warmer months. UHF's really are in a league of their own and truly special. If you don't think it would get much wear then it doesn't make sense to spend that kinda money on one. You could just go with one of IH's overdyed type III's  😎

I went through a long Bukowski phase.I love his prose, but I wonder how I would feel about his themes as an "adult." I read all of his work when I was 20.

JK Rowling-wise, I'm not sure I could pick! If pressed I might say Azkaban tied with the Half Blood Prince, but then again I really love them all. Was just saying to my gf the other day that I need to reread the whole series… it's been a while. Maybe my opinion will change, haha...

I'll also say that Kavalier & Clay is one of my all time faves! Fantastic. Have you read the Goldfinch? Those two remind me of each other a bit.

Goblet for me is the perfect mixture of the HP series, but I can't fault either of those choices. Have you listened to Binge Mode? So good. Might have to start an HP tread. I'm doing a re-read now, actually. I'm following along with Binge Mode as they go over them. I'm at Order right now.

                                          I haven't read the Goldfinch. Should I?

I of all people should know if there is a books thread buts it's late and I can't be arsed looking it up. So thread rot be damned (for now).

My feelings on Bukowski are that we shouldn't get all revisionist given current context. His themes are what they are and I don't think even he liked his own feelings and attitudes towards women, alcohol etc. I tend to take everything he writes as the distilled psyche of an un-reconstructed man who who knew how to write. If nothing else it provides a window into the kind of toxic masculinity that is often mentioned but misunderstood these days. I believe Bukowski knew it was toxic but was unable to do much about it. For me his writing remains now as it was when I read him in my early 20's, a brilliant, shining, brutal and eloquently presented example of what we should all avoid becoming.
