@Appfaff sorry about your misfortune. I just saw this,  or I wouldn't have bothered you like I did. Best wishes to you brother.

It was just pictures of jeans seems pretty trivial compared to what you're currently going through.

I was in the college cafe opposite the building where I work, watching the world go by…every single young guy I saw was wearing a tracksuit or jogging suit, with the hood up. Not one single pair of jeans, and there were dozens of them. I found it fascinating. Not one of them had an ounce of originality in what they were wearing...JD Sports is clearly thriving.

The youth are meant to be revolting...but they are bland, their music is bland, and their style is bland. 90% of young people, you are pathetic.

At least my little fella l9ves his denim and skull and crossbones tees, and 'heavy rock and roll' which is how he refers to death metal...he's only 3. Proud dad.

Personal preferences aside, are jeans more original than track suits? Jeans are pretty much the vanilla of casual pants: been the "default" pant for a long, long time. The form changes (skinny, baggy, low rise, high rise, stone wash, acid wash, raw) but the ones most of us wear only look original in the sense that they resemble heritage variants of the form.

                Think it, be it.

people like us are made fun of by the anti-denim cabal over at AAAC  😃

YES. And my point was the absence of any variation, they are students. Art students, engineering students, beauty students. People have worn denim and individual8sed it for decades. Each decade has it's variation. I understand youth culture, I enjoy studying it and have obviously lived it like most of us. I'm not and old git that is so detached from youth that it all seems alien to me.

My point is that youth and teens should 'shock' their elders, not blur into the blandness of uniform society. Rock and roll, punk, hip hop, rave, all of these illicited 'shock' from the media in their day and outraged parents. Now all that outrages parents is stabbings and gang culture. Some of us aren't even shocked by that.

Rather than open up the world, the internet, social media, Z list celebrity culture, and high streets all becoming faceless in all but the most resistant market towns where independents can thrive.

It saddens me. Cultural diversity is becoming homogenised (the arts, not race). A handful of global companies own the market share of businesses, aggressive take overs of smaller businesses by their larger competitors (Costa and Coca Cola anyone? Costa are franchises, and while I'll always favour independents, I'd rather they were owned by Whitbread than Coke).

Society is sleep walking, yet being convinced by the media that we have more choice than ever.

Perhaps, but for any generation that is wholesale deemed disappointing in some way, I can point to the environment created by prior generations (including things like the advancement of technology and resulting interconnectedness) and the rearing of their parents. No one becomes a dickhead in isolation. When I hear people complaining about the inadequacies and entitlement of millennials, for example, my immediate thought is that a) someone likely once said the same thing of them and b) they should have been better influences and created a better world if they don't like what they produced. The world is changing and we are in uncharted territory as a species. We are ever more connected (for better or worse) and ever more distracted by ephemera. Of course this has a profound impact on the human psyche; I'd hoped for the better at the dawn of this age, but it appears to be for the worse in the early running. A shame that interconnection and the availability of data within an instance seems to be having a net negative effect: not a good reflection on our species.

                        Think it, be it.

I work in social care, and my wife works in social policy and has sight of lots of national research data, much of which is now completed in large scale sample groups.

                            For the age group 16-25

This is the most isolated and lonely generation  ever recorded

This is the generation that is having the least sexual and physical relationships ever recorded

This is the most obese  generation ever recorded

There are more childhood deaths caused by murder by young people ever recorded

The data is stark too, it isn't a gradual slide as you might expect, they have been sizemic jumps.

And yes, our generation has helped create that for our young people.

I am not a moaner, I try and be a doer. I want every week to make a difference in the community. 30 to 60 year olds need to take more responsibility for the young, build more positive relationships and communicate, rather than whole families having their heads down looking at smart phones when they are out together.

                            Is this the rant thread?

Agreed. Everything from diet to the technology to public policy is a factor. I'm hoping we can get past this lull in human advancement. Our potential as a species is nearly limitless. If you don't believe me, consider that we completely take for granted on a continuous basis things that would literally have been considered miraculous centuries (heck, decades even) ago such as the fact that I just got off a giant flying machine and am now wirelessly communicating thoughts instantaneously across the planet.

I believe the key is discipline from parents and teachers. Today people are too soft on them and it shows in the result.

I'm not a luddite. I can see the absolute positive impact that technology CAN have.

Anyone who's studied psychology will have learned that the majority of funding for research in the field has been provided by media and marketing. Is that because people that want to market unnecessary products are concerned about our mental wellbeing or are they looking to develop new ways of disassociating us emotionally from our money?
