Still, if men will choose to be holed up together on a ship for months at a time, if they want to try a convince themselves that their sexuality might not be compromised, then let the vessel be a she…until women are permitted to all areas of the military...

Well consider the Romantic languages, in which all nouns carry gender and verbs must be conjugated to agree with them. Perhaps that's why it seems so odd to English speakers to assign gender to inanimate objects.
