^  This is all incredibly common in the U.S. too.  For some reason people have been led to believe that if you overpay for a pair of sweats/tights with a brand name on them they magically become appropriate to wear just about anywhere.

For the dudes it comes down to sheer laziness.  For the ladies its effectively hiding their spanx in plain sight.  Plenty of females walking around in $150 Lululemon tights that want you to think they're heading to/from the gym but haven't exercised since they were forced to in grade school.
