At risk of being slightly political, I think that politics has become increasingly polarised on all sides, and those on the extremes of their respective parties have tended to set the agenda.

I don't know what the solution is. 😞

I find it incredulous that a "civilised" country can get itself into a position that it has to shut down government….This is not a political statement....

Especially when the sticking point (from both sides) is the future, health and welfare of children (moral not political opinion).

Agreed to the gentlemen above. I can’t believe we are in the current situation. It’s downright shameful and embarrassing.

Agree with Clint. I’m fkn embarrassed. Special interest groups such as insurance companies control my government. I’m furious actually. Not embarrassed.

Well, it's sorta only a "partial" shutdown.  Workers deemed "essential" will continue to work, without pay.

That way, citizens/voters are less affected and the political gamesmanship can continue without any check on its irrationality.

funny.  imagine telling people to work for no pay because the job they do is essential (dangerous and life-threatening)
aLso people on leave for whatever reasons are required to come to work because during a shut down there is no leave or days off even if sick or a death in the family or a tree falls through your house cause that's the way it goes

while the elected officials making decisions continue with their pay and lifetime benefits

the stress this causes on the regular working folks is insane and i didn't even get into the contractors and other folks who are government employees but basically screwed over while this is going on

oh and we haven't even touched on the lack of guidance in these government agencies because of the clear nepotism which i thought was supposed to be illegal in appointments

                serenity now, serenity now

want some fun reading?  look at this https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/m-18-05-Final.pdf

                okay i'm done

damn it i said to myself i would not comment on this stuff as i have way too much involvement to really be objective

Right… all Members of the house and senate continue to get paid regardless of the shutdown. Criminals

You're just saying that because functioning without a government is one of the few things Belgians are good at.

Depending on how the pay periods are set up, she should get at least one more. My wife and I will get paid this Fri even if the Govt is shut down.

I don't know about you guys, but it's not "essential" employees, it's "exempt".

Meanwhile, I work on a military base… All of the service members are affected by this.

But luckily, one of the long standing military banks, USAA, has vowed to still pay all service members that bank with them as usual until the government un-f***s itself.

We've kind of done this to ourselves. At least in Maryland where I live, the politicians pass laws we don't actually want. If you want a new law in place, why not put it up for referendum?

Instead, we elect these assholes into office and then say "ok, you know best, go forth and do what you think is right for us".

In fact, when the breed specific ban on dogs was up for repeal, my representative had the nerve to say to me over email "I believe that the ban should stay in place, based on my neighbors experiences with this breed".

Fuck you, I don't care what your beliefs are, your goddamn job is to represent my beliefs.

Sorry if I came off dickish. The only reason why I brought this up was because someone on my FB page said "if they're not essential, then they should be fired. I don't want to pay for these people if I don't need them" (This person has since been deleted)

Becomes an optics/semantics thing with the wordage.
