Unpop-op: I love a good ole shutdown…
You're just saying that because functioning without a government is one of the few things Belgians are good at.
-
My wife is also one of the "essential" employees so she has to work on Monday knowing that she won't see a paycheck for the foreseeable future.
Meanwhile, I work on a military base… All of the service members are affected by this.
But luckily, one of the long standing military banks, USAA, has vowed to still pay all service members that bank with them as usual until the government un-f***s itself.

We've kind of done this to ourselves. At least in Maryland where I live, the politicians pass laws we don't actually want. If you want a new law in place, why not put it up for referendum?
Instead, we elect these assholes into office and then say "ok, you know best, go forth and do what you think is right for us".
In fact, when the breed specific ban on dogs was up for repeal, my representative had the nerve to say to me over email "I believe that the ban should stay in place, based on my neighbors experiences with this breed".
Fuck you, I don't care what your beliefs are, your goddamn job is to represent my beliefs.

Sorry if I came off dickish. The only reason why I brought this up was because someone on my FB page said "if they're not essential, then they should be fired. I don't want to pay for these people if I don't need them" (This person has since been deleted)
Becomes an optics/semantics thing with the wordage.

While I'm not a BUE anymore, this may help some of you out:
May want to contact your Union rep when this is over to see if there's any lawsuits after the shutdown ends.
-
i didn't bother with the wordage because i understood "essential" to refer to what someone in government to commonly refer to as "exempt"
closest would be explaining extinct vs. endangered vs. extant to someone just casually talking about wanting an Iron Heart shirt. i would just tell the person the product is a limited run or the product is made every XX amount of months
additionally, you don't have to be bargaining unit to get in on the class action, but i still haven't gotten paid for the last shutdown.
don't even make me get into class actions, every 2 or 3 years we have one related to portal to portal and all that crap, jeez i'm ruining my sunday by thinking about this stuff, hahahaha

You working tomorrow? I have to go in for my required four hours then I'm off to furlough-cation.
Funny story: when Jody and I got married, we put off our honeymoon because she was travelling over 20 weeks/year for work. When we got around to it, we decided we wanted to bank the money we put aside and have a stay-cation. But before we could do that, the furlough in 2013 happened. So we had our honeymoon stay-cation without burning any leave
Plus Hex was still a puppy back then, was two of the best weeks of my life.
PS-I too hate extinct vs. endangered vs. extant

yeap i'm working all damn day
a co-worker of mine actually was called back off maternity leave because during this mess there is no such thing as leave and if you not at work there is no telling what will happen but it is likely you will not get paid for the day.
this is a mess, an i have been known to make a mess but this is some next level mess
last couple (2?) pages is one of the greatest thread hijacks in forum history, haha haha

Also, that's good to know that my wife should have another check pending. We don't have a joint bank account so I'll call her bluff if she tries to hustle me saying that she hasn't been paid.
Conveniently, the shutdown occurred at the end of a pay period, so there is a two week lag before the real pain sets in.

^ Exactly. The mf ers in the District are in thrall to their owners and don't give a shit what working Americans want.
