Portland has a burgeoning little denim district on Burnside Street between about 10th and 14th. There's a Self Edge, a Tellason, an Imogene & Willie and an American Appearel to name just three of the shops selling raw and selvedge denim there. You'll also find Tanner Goods in Portland, which is well known to denim fans.

EDIT: My mistake! Of course it's NOT a Tellason right next to Imogene & Willie but the most venerated Portland player in selvedge culture - Tanner Goods! They just stock a ton of Tellason stuff. Sorry about that.

There's also Lizard Lounge in the Pearl District. They handle Railcar Fine Goods as well as a passel of other brands. They focus mainly on American made product but include some Japanese imports as well. I'll add more locations and details in the coming days. There are a bunch more excellent shops here in PDX.

        Denim Retail:

        Self Edge
        Tanner Goods
        Lizard Lounge
        Imogene + Willie
        Orn Hansen

        Other Retail:
Frances May (more fashion driven, but always some great things)
Made Here PDX (exclusively goods made in Portland, which makes this inherently hit + miss, but there are some gems)
Langlitz Leathers (raddest place to visit in Portland, old school in all the best ways, closed weekends, consignment    jackets are the best deal in the land if you find one that fits you!)
        Canoe (homewares, design oriented)
Beam + Anchor (homewares and furniture…most Portland retail store in the best way possible)
Rivelo (The best bicycle lifestyle shop in town, and the bikeshop you should wish your city had!...they carry exclusively Rivendell bicycles, and an assortment of merino wool, bike and bikey bags, camping gear, granfors bruks hatchets, books, soaps, etc. etc.  Probably my favorite non-cafe place to hang out in Portland, and definitely my favorite retail location in Portland.  Everything for sale here is useful, beautiful, and will lead you in the direction of fun if you buy it and use it!)

        Coffee
        Heart Coffee Roasters
        Either/Or
        Good Coffee

        Food/Drink
Pok Pok is a Portland classic
Any restaurant in the Toro Bravo, Tasty & Sons/Alder, Mediterranean Exploration Company family are outstanding.
Chicken and Rice at Nong's Khao Man Gai is delicious and perfect in everyway
Podnah's is a great BBQ place that is worth a trip if you aren't from a BBQ mecca.
Ned Ludd and it's offshoot Pizza restaurant P.R.E.A.M. are both phenomenal.
Cascade Barrel House for sours/barrel aged beers.
The Commons brewery for some intriguing and delicious beers.

I'll second Made Here PDX and Cascade Barrel House.

If you're buying bottles of beer, not just drinking at one of the many, many great breweries, John's Marketplace has a fantastic selection.

I'll also throw in Hotel Modera as a nice place to stay while in town.  A short walk from SEPDX and super convenient to all forms of public transportation.

Too bad they don't have the chicken and donut anymore (last time I visited).

Wesco, located 30 minutes outside Portland in Scappoose, Oregon. They make damn good boots. You could do worse things with your money; same goes for Atlas Tattoo. Just go pick something off the wall and bam, super rad souvenir! Seriously, there's a reason they're regularly voted best shop in town.

Lardo is a great place for very unhealthy food. Get the fully loaded fries…

Surprise trip just dropped. Katie has to go to PDX for a week in October and the same week just happened to be available for me to take off so if anyone will be in Portland let me know. Other than SE what shops should I check out?

@GraemeE I’m envious of all of you PNW guys. Spent a couple of weeks in and around Seattle and loved every minute of it. If all of life’s decisions were up to me, I would probably be living there…

Although the more I travel and see the world, the more areas I find that I would love to call home. You really are in a beautiful spot in the world. 🙂
