      As you guys may know I am taking part in my first full marathon in York next Sunday;

      The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon Sunday 8th October 2017

      I am being realistic in my completion time aiming for 4 hours. Training has gone well over the last 6 months and this time I am running for myself (not for a charity)

      Will update this thread post race.

              Yesterday I took part in the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon with the race being held in York. This was my first full marathon so I was uncertain of what to expect. The longest training run I'd completed was 20 miles so I was particularly concerned about the last 6 miles. I had read that the crowd and other runners help you through the last 6 miles. I had set my self what I thought to be a sensible target time of 4 hours. I include a couple of pics from the event and my Garmin watch time;

              Pre race trying to look calm however the nerves are just under the surface.

              Crossing the finishing line feeling elated and hurting.

              At home today.

              Unofficial Garmin watch time.

              My official time was 4 hours 7 minutes and 1 second. Happy with that! However, since the race my body has been and is still hurting. Will I do another marathon? maybe when the memory of the pain and suffering of this one is totally forgotten. This challenge I set myself has to be one of the hardest  🙂

                            Congrats @den1mhead!!!  Curious to know splits.  Last 10k is always awful no matter how perfectly you pace yourself.  From the looks of it you ran a pretty evenly split race.

                                      @den1mhead Nice work, Barcley!  Were you able to eat much during the race?  Do you have any preferences for nutrition and electrolytes while you run?  (i.e. Clif bloks, GU gummies, Nuun, etc)  For myself, trying to figure out what my body will tolerate during a long run has been a painful trial and error process.

                                      Hoping to do my first 1/2 in a few weeks and first full marathon in the spring.  Here are a few of the races I have planned.

Gummies during bike rides and I always drink the powder on a ride. Their cookies and cream protein bars are like a candy bar and you can’t go wrong with either protein powder!

                                          I use High5 gels and electrolyte drinks.
                                          For the marathon I took two gels on the start line and then a gel every 30 minutes thereafter. So over the whole marathon I consumed 10 gels. I carried my gels on a High5 waist belt. I also took an electrolyte drink at mile 6, 12 and 18 provided by the race, sipping as I ran. I took water whenever it was available.
                                          Good luck on your upcoming races buddy  🙂

                                            @Engineer I would encourage you to buy as many types and flavors you can get your hands on.  For an HM the use of gels and how they taste isn't as necessary, but when you start talking about the second half of a full, especially the last 10-12K, you will really want to consider how intense the flavor is.  A gel you think tastes good 8-10 miles into a run may have you gagging 20 miles into a marathon.  In my opinion the more bland the better.
