Has anyone ever had a dog develop an abscess for no apparent reason?

On Sunday we noticed my girl dog had a change in gait. On Monday, we noticed that she was limping sporadically and was lethargic. We immediately took her to the vet. Somehow, it literally took me, the vet and the nurse ten minutes to notice the fist sized abscess on her left shoulder (she's kind of a lumpy dog).

They drained and irrigated it yesterday morning under sedation, and there's a silly straw sticking out of her shoulder now, but the weird thing is there's no evidence of what caused it. No bites, no scratches, nothing.

Genuinely looking for some insight here. Would like to avoid this ever happening again.

Any kind of tiny scratch can result in an abscess. It's just down to luck. If enough bacterias get inside the body that they overwhelm the local defenses, you get an infection. Those bacterias are typically staph, and they live on our bodies, so there's not much you can do to get rid of them. An abscess is actually the less worrisome kind of infection because it's localized and easy to take care off. Cellulitis is rather worse I think.

Foreground - Silver Gilt Tatzer given by Queen Victoria to the original occupier of our house
              Background - Tiger

More background.  In 1844 the King of the French was on a state visit to England, his departure was delayed as a heavy storm meant that he could not get out to his royal yacht.  So The Queen and her party who were accompanying the King kicked out Thomas Grants (the Portsmouth Navy Victiually Superintendent and first occupier of our house) house guests and had a meal (in the room I am typing this) here.  Once the storm had subsided, the King sailed for France, and Queen Vic and co (Prince Albert Duke of Boot etc left).  As a present for his hospitality, the Queen gave Thomas Grant the Tatzer.

We knew of its existence and actually knew who had it.  A few years ago at a party here, Paula was bold (pissed) enough to ask if she could buy it.  The answer was no.  A few years later she received a phone call telling her she could buy it after all (and at the same price the seller had originally paid for it "because it belongs in your house").  Paula gave it to me as a surprise Birthday present a couple of years ago.

And since I didn't know what a tatzer is (apparently a covered bon bon dish), Google led me to this article about when Gosport was global news.

                          Food for thought:

Do you have a plan if something were to happen to your entire family?

I just heard a tragic story of how a man was killed in a car accident, and it took a couple days for the family to realize that his dog was home alone. When they got to his house, the dog was starving. It had been suffering for days after he lost his best friend. Sad.

Jody and I redid our wills earlier this week. We've set aside 30% of our total value for my best friend to take in our dogs should we both pass (not a bribe, it's just that they're expensive, I just spent $1500 to drain an abcess in my girl).

We also have emergency contact information in our wallets and our employer has emergency contact info so that either our neighbor our my buddy will come over to at least feed and walk them since nobody is coming home. They both have keys and the code to the alarm system. My dogs know them. They know how to take care of them if something comes up.

Just something to think about. It's common for people to think about who gets their offspring should something happen, but pets don't get the same.

Interestingly, at least to me, there is an entire body of law devoted specifically to pets.  Custody in divorces, care after owner's death, etc.  There are even lawyers that specialize in pet law…
