soooooooooo…i finally was able to check both watches of interest out in person the other day 🙂

while first being blown away from the tudor, the watch i actually want to buy as a birthday present to myself, i soon had to realize, after putting on and wearing the rolex for a couple of minutes, that i wasn't that sure anymore about the "simplicity" of the tudor. all black everything and really nothing that gave me that "boom, this is it" feeling…which the rolex gave me. so now i'm looking into copping a rolex sub as part of my 30th birthday present 🙂 looking for a 1987 model in perfect shape...just in case you guys are keeping an eye out for me 🙂

talking about chrono24...has anyone in europe bought a watch from the states and had it shipped to your door? if yes, did you have any problems with customs or so? need/want to avoid that if amorphe possible 🙂

If you buy a watch in the USA and ship and insure it you are liable for  VAT.
It's better to buy in Europe.

do you have any recommendations when it comes to the rolex submariner date? like what model/year of production to go for etc.?

If your buying it to where every day a new sub date with five year warranty is about as good as it gets. That and the GMT are in my view the best bang for your buck.
Older vintage style watches are great but in my view need that bit more looking after.

Rolex also have a ten year service interval on watches manufactured since 2015, whereas a vintage piece will be half that. That'd be another consideration.

What surprised me is how much some of the vintage Subs are going for. Prices on Chrono24 for a 1987 piece ranged from $7,000 to $12,000 (Australian). A new Air King, which is the Rolex that I'd go for, is around $8,000 (Australian).

OK, a vintage piece will hold it's value better, but I'm not really seeing a lot of value. Rolex produce a lot of watches each year, so most of these things aren't particularly rare.

The smart money has Rolex producing about 750,000 watched per year…...I sort of get why one would want a vintage one (I just got one myself), but a new one, I just don't understand......

I went new; i found it less hassle to authenticate (nil). Warranty wasn't a factor for me, peace of mind it was legit did. That said, if I was in EU and could buy in person I'd be all over watchrecon and chrono24 and pick something up locally. I shared a few specific watches that caught my eye for quality price vintage..

@Finn666 if you want a black sub. go bamford.  😛 😛

with that said, the only place i'll buy rolex second hand from is a trusted retailer. i know this guy who has a shop in singapore that only deals rolex. i was introduced to him and his knowledge on rolex is impeccable. i'm not sure how the EU is, but if you would know any trusted/ well known vintage rolex retailer, go for it..

furthermore, my cousin works for the hour glass, so i'm pretty safe in buying watches. i somehow still can't trust buying online for something that high of value..

Black Rolex is no warranty and Rolex will not support or supply parts for the watch. Black Tudor is better bet if you fancy a black watch as it has full warranty.

Something about wearing a black watch gets tedious after a while for me.  I also think it's not as versatile as a basic stainless steel model. But it always comes down to a single guiding principle- buy the one that connects emotionally.  Warranties, resale value, versatility; all of that's irrelevant if you don't love to put it on each day.

I'm surprised that Rolex don't offer a black watch, but they tend to be incredibly conservative.

I've been having a bit of a fetish for them recently. Cartier do a few, these are the Ballon Bleu and Santos. Probably not to everyone's tastes. You can't see it in this photo, but the top watch has a lovely guilloche face.

@Tempvs has definitely outdone me on the black watch front! 😃 😃 😃

I really like the Ladoire. Kronometry 1999 had a similar one on sale a few years back, but I couldn't afford the discounted price tag.

I was browsing in the Chopard boutique in Melbourne today, and saw the L.U.C. XP Skeletec. It's probably not my thing as it's too dressy, but it's a lovely watch.

Great looking watch. Who makes it?

Thanks, it was manufactured by a now defunct company called Debaufre.

It's my understanding that this one was a LE model, and only 200 were made. It's a great watch and a reasonable size for a Nav B-UHR pilot which are normally 48 mm or more. This one measures in at 44 mm and uses a Swiss 17 jewel Unitas 6497 hand wound movement. It was tremendous value for money for being made in Switzerland. Heck, it would be a great value if it was many anywhere else, too.

If you're into it I'd suggest looking up https://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/flieger-watch/nav-b-uhr-44-automatik-b-muster.html. Somehow both companies were affiliated, but that's all I know.

                                          I love the blue hands!

…and the back of the watch is fun, too.

Wearing this guy today. This was a hard watch to get. It's a Jaeger-LeCoultre (JLC) Tribute To Deep Sea Alarm.

This one was the European version of which 959 were made, and 350 of the American version. The difference being that the American version has writing all over the dial which, to me, takes away from the watch.

                                            Hoodinkee has more:

Here's a video of the alarm going off, which is pretty cool to have a mechanical watch with an alarm.

The one thing I changed was the strap. I was able to source a NOS tropical strap from the early 70's. Not that there was anything wrong with the original, but I prefer this one.
