Well, the pairs with much fading show what a denim is able to do. It then depends on the wearer to deliver the results. If somebody never gets much fading he probably won't get crazy results with a pair that's capable of great fading results. That said, you should look into the double duck fabric for a fabric that will easily fade. The 21 oz Standard denim is more of a tough nut to crack.

The denim is dipped in the same indigo for the same number of times for the same elapsed period.  The different fades wearers achieve is 100% down to lifestyle.

Which is really why denim is so special.  Without wanting to sound pretentious, denim to some extent tells your story/documents your lifestyle…

Thanks Giles. I didn't find that pretentious. It's a difficult decision! Enjoyable though

Can anyone tell me how much shrinkage in the waist after sufficient soaks? And did you find that it stretched back to tag size? Thanks

All horizontal measurements will shrink proportionally to waist shrinkage, all vertical measurements proportionally to inseam shrinkage.

Seeing as waist, knee and hem measurements don't involve masses of fabric, shrinkage is negligible, unless of course they were too tight to behind with.

EDIT: Of course it would be easier to follow @Giles link which explains things much more succinctly  😢

A hole in the crotch area and reinforcements on the right knee. I'll take some pictures of the Damage when I'm back home, @Sam .

Hey all, was wondering if a cold, warm or hot soak makes a difference in shrinkage for the 21/23oz unsanforized UHRs? They're pretty loose everywhere, but don't want them to shrink TOO much if I go hot. Thanks!

I'd recommend a hot soak or 60C wash. Just get all the shrinkage out and be done. They'll stretch in the waist if you need them to.

Please be very careful washing these in a washing machine.

In the early days when the denim is still very stiff, there is a tendency to get unwanted fade lines.  I would probably never wash UHR rightside out and I would never wash in an aggressive washing machine and I certainly would not spin or tumble dry.  Do any of those things, and I guarantee that you will be pissed off with yourself….

I washed my UHR BB right side out, because it was so friggin stiff after the soak I could not turn it left. Got a shitload of fadelines from it which piss me off every time I put it on.

Yeah I'd definitely avoid a washing machine at all costs. I have a pair of Flat Heads that were stiff as a board after the initial soak, but it eventually went away and softened up, plus I'll use the starch in the fabric to my advantage to get some crisp whiskering and honeycomb foundations.

I also typically turn them inside out when soaking/washing to get all the sweat grime out of the inside (although sometimes I don't), so I'll make sure I do that every time too.

Apologies. I was a little cavalier with my original advice, and the guys are correct, you need to be careful with UHR. The washing machine is, from my experience, totally unproblematic, as long the jeans are wet through (I use the shower head), and the spin cycle is turned off or right down.

Mine were soaked twice and machine washed  twice to get Max shrinkage. The combs and whiskers set regardless and the indigo falls out if you look at it too hard. And following the above method, no marbling or crease lines.
