I flicked through a lot of this thread looking for ideas on bags.
I needed something extremely hard wearing, relatively 'multi purpose', not to big & not too small.
I finally settled on a leather 'farriers bag'.
Having purchased a gun slip & several belts from the same place, I had no worries about quality & ruggedness.
I was however unsure about the size….. as much as there were measurements listed, it was still difficult to picture in my head.
Eventually, I went ahead & ordered & the size worked out perfectly.
I think if I use this bag seven days a week, I will struggle to wear it out in my lifetime! At £150, I'm more than happy.
The pictures have my 1930's Ironheart Wesco's in to give a perspective.
The hobble belt came from the same place as the bag, I'm sure that would prevent a buffalo from wandering off too!

      Andy.

I'm vaguely looking at rucksacks again, and have found a few interesting options that haven't been mentioned in these parts.

I really like the South2 West8 Trek Pack, and the Nigel Cabourn Mountain Rucksack is a similar design. I really like basic packs, but it's got a decidedly primitive harness.

The Cotopaxi Nazca 24L Travel Pack might be too small for extended trips, but I'm wanting to downsize my carry-on to cut weight. It opens in half like a suitcase, and has had a good review and blog writeup.

The Fjallraven Travel Pack is a similar design to the Nazca, in that it has a clamshell opening, but is a bit larger at around 35 litres. There's a matching Travel Toiletry Bag that fits into a compartment behind the zip on the front. It looks a clever system.

The Kletterwerks Drei Zip is a cross between one of the Mystery Ranch tri-zip packs, and the Flip pack.

My new backpack. Triple Aught Design Fast Pack Litespeed. Heavier then I thought but nice. Foliage wasn't my first choice in color (that would have been black), but I found this one used with three small pouches and the internal organizer for 50,00 € less then the backpack alone is sold here in Germany.

My wife hates it. My son wants it. My daugther envys me for the glow in the dark ranger eyes.  😃

A great pack indeed! I also have the foliage, but ideally wanted the black! It's actually pretty versatile.

Is it the latest version (they changed the way the shoulder straps were incorporated into the frame)?

I ain't got time to bleed.

Yes, it is the v2 of the pack. I'll try to take some more pictures over the weekend.

There's an interview with Douglas Davidson at Carryology about the collaboration he's doing with Cordura, which uses their TPX fabric.

This backpack is part of the range, along with a tote and messenger bag, and will be available at The Brown Buffalo on 18th April. I really like the look of it, because it's simple. Most things seem over designed to me these days.

Bagjack Sniper Bag. I dont much get into the tech/tacticool stuff that much but I wanted a different smallish day bag and this one caught my eye. It's small but holds quite a bit with everything being quickly accessible. Truthfully, I am surprised how much organization they crammed into a bag this size. Quality is as you'd expect from Bagjack and is top notch.

I apologize in advance about the picture quality, but I hope this helps you get an idea of how it's constructed. First, the bag has four waterproof YKK zips: one on the top which can reach all panels, one on the front, and two for the hand warmer. From the molle side inward, the first layer is a slighly elevated, padded slot for a small tablet (fits my kindle and supposedly fits an Ipod mini):

The next slot reaches the bottom of the bag and has a coated cordura slot for a notebook/ wallet/ phone:

Next is a zippered spot that holds the hand warmer (which is easily removable). This slot can also hold a slimmer water bottle, although make sure the lid is on tight. I didnt [emoji849] and this compartment became a hydration bladder. Luckily none of my electronics got wet:

Lastly there is another slot with an organization panel for pens, a slim phone or ipod, etc. This pocket is accessible through the top zip or front zip:

Lastly, a gratuitous muff shot [emoji1]:

Let me know if you need any other pics or angles.

Today was the last day that the Carryology Store was open in Melbourne. 😞

They've been running down stock in anticipation of closing, and this weekend everything was half price. I picked up a couple of pieces.

My brother, @GuzziRob, is a keen photographer. Last night I asked him if he was interested in any of the remaining camera bags, and he picked out a Burton x F-Stop one. I think that it's a limited edition, Japan-only model.

                                Yes, I have a purple sofa. 😉

I came close to buying a Bedouin Foundry Pequod. @Cutlasshound will think that I'm crazy for not doing so, but the position of the straps meant that the top of the pack would interfere with a motorcycle helmet when riding in a crouch position.

Instead I got myself a Thisispaper Top Roll Rucksack in off white.

Thisispaper are a publisher, design collective, and gaggle of hipsters from Warsaw in Poland. I'd seen it whilst browsing things there a few days ago, and thought that it looked a nice bag. I was after something that's smaller and lighter than my Defy Verbockel, fits the personal item dimensions for US airlines, and could take a couple of standard sized packing cubes (14" x 10" x 3") in its main compartment.

The pack itself is made from an undyed 19 oz canvas, which Thisispaper describe as sailcloth, with natural vegetable tanned leather for straps and the base, and I expect that it'll patinate beautifully. The stitching is really clean. Inside there are a few pockets and a laptop sleeve, built into a linen lining.

Incidentally, it's possible that there'll be a final day next weekend in an attempt to clear out remaining stock. Things that might be of interest include:

                                • Tanner Goods Wilderness Rucksack in both spruce salt and pepper and blue salt and pepper.

                                • Bedouin Foundry Pequod in black. There were two of these earlier today.

                                • GoRuck Kid Ruck in pink.

                                • Peak Design Everyday Messenger in tan.

                                • Atelier De L'Armée Flight Pack in black, and the Flight Carrier in various colours.

                                • Thisispaper Classic Backpack in grey.

If there's anything that sounds interesting, they might be able to post it out to you, or I can proxy it.

I'm really impressed with a lot of details on the Thisispaper bag. My one concern is that there's a side access zipper, and that's likely to be a weak spot.

I'll have to post evo pictures when I get there.

Had a tour on Thisispaper website, kinda like the Transfer Bag, might need to have a closer look, think about one.

There was a green Transfer Bag at the Carryology Store about a week ago. It was a really nice piece.

I wasn't 100% sure about how the straps on the Thisispaper rucksack are joined to the body, but they feel as tough as the Verbockel, so they shouldn't be a problem. And I'm unlikely to carry more than 10 kg in it. 🙂

As for the zip, it can be replaced pretty easily if it gets damaged. But it's a straight pull, so should be good. Given the choice, I'd have done without.

I'm expecting the rucksack to stain, get indigo all over it, and generally get really messed up. It's going to be great.
