I've never owned a pair of Oni's before, but I was thinking about getting in on the Denimio Samurai vs. Oni competition. Initially, I was going to go with the Samurai 710 because I own two pairs and like the fit, but for that same reason (I own two pairs), I was also thinking of switching it up and going with the Oni xx512, but the size chart is off the wall.

I would chalk it up to shrinkage, but even the one-wash chart has waist sizes almost 2.5 inches more than the tag size.

      Any input on this?

Disregard as I noticed on the 512, a 28 tag size yields a 31" waist and a 6" hem, so they are out. I'm not sure I could even get my foot through a 6" hem.

The 517 measurements are in my wheelhouse, so they may be my pair.

I own a pair of 517xxBE (16.5oz pre soak unsanforized beige weft) and I can say that the 517 fit is the best slim fit that I have found to date.  I'm normally not a slim fit guy, I prefer a mid rise classic straight leg fit like the IH 634,  but I like to have a lighter weight slim fit pair or two around for summers.  The 517 fit is money, I highly recommend it.

I highly recommend the 517xxBE for anyone looking for a cool pair of beige weft slim fit jeans in a lighter weight.

Glad to hear this. I pre-ordered the 517xx contest pair (no arc version) from Denimio. I don't think they ship until April, but looking forward to checking them out.

This thread has been dying a slow death but I'm interested in Oni and would like to revive it.

These are the only Oni's I've handled, with the exception of the N&F x Oni collab. I'm super impressed, to say the least. The denim is heavy and incredible with a truck-load of slub - and they're built like tanks.

If anyone can read Japanese, I would love to know what is says on the fabric in the rear pocket. There is no sizing tag and I'm not sure what model this is. I purchased on these on a whim on the second hand market based on measurements and photos. I think the denim is the Oni Shaoi…can anyone who knows Oni confirm?

I dont know much about Oni but those are beautiful. I love the natural color and purple/gold selvedge lines. Beautiful contrast stitching too!

I think those are an older pair of awa shoai natural indigo jeans like you mentioned.
Fabric reminds me a bit of the Self Edge x Dry Bones natural indigo collaboration.
Nice pick up, I like these more than more current Oni jeans.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I'm nearly certain these are a pair of very early awa shaoi natural indigo jeans, before Oni started overlaying the stamp that appears on later awa shaoi demon head patches. The selvedge that appears on later awa shoai's is assymmetrical - with one side being all white. Other characteristics of this denim appear identical to the limited awa shoai's sold for a while through Heddels, etc.

These are incredible to behold in person - definately at least 19oz. and with a texture, color and overall sheen like no other denim I've seen before. Some of the pics make the denim look lighter than it is; it's actually a very dark hue with bits of lighter almost royal blue coursing through it.

Agree that Oni's latest offerings don't quite measure up to the earlier stuff. I certainly wish Oni would use this denim again 🙂

I used to own a pair of those ASNs… Denim was insane... Fit wasn't for me though... And yea: purple selvedge and streaky denim - those I remember...

I bought a pair of Oni 546ZR earlier in the year, and they are my favourite jeans. The fit is perfect and just feel so lovely to wear.
I have heard/seen some peoples complaints on Oni jeans not being durable enough and needing repairs long within the year, so I will see how mine go.

I can't yet speak to the durability of Oni. I can say I've never had a pair of jeans, IH included, that didn't need repairs within the first 6-7 months. I'm not talking about accidents, just normal crotch wear and hem patchment (but i like to drag my cuffs).

I've seen that too. It seems to mostly be due to the loose weave of the fabric. I have a pair of Oni olives (unworn) that seem to be constructed beautifully. I remember the worst offense was one pair on sufu that had the cuff rip really quick. That's not a construction issue, but a fabric issue.

I saw that cuff rip pic on sufu also. Seemed like a one off.
